Boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 36.

De la Hoya, nicknamed 'the Golden Boy', held world titles at six different weights and ends with a win loss record of 39-6 with 30 knockouts.

"When I cannot compete at this level, I have come to the conclusion that it is over," said the Mexican-American.

"Knowing you are never going to fight again is a tough decision but I am looking forward to the future."

De la Hoya won a gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and won 10 world titles, first at super-featherweight, before moving eventually through to middleweight.

He beat Julio Cesar Chavez for the light welterweight championship twice and claimed the unofficial crown of the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world when he beat Pernell Whitaker for the WBC welterweight crown in 1997.

In 2007, he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr but it was defeat by Manny Pacquiao last December, his last fight, that pushed him towards retirement.

De la Hoya added: "This was a decision I was going back and forth with, thinking I can do it one more time.

"But it's not fair to me, it's not fair to the fans, it's not fair to nobody. I've come to the conclusion that's over, it's over inside the ring for me."
It's the right time to go, it would be a loss for the sport if he was sill the De la Hoya we all knew but he has lost it.

A definite legend of the sport though.

Re: De la Hoya calls time on career

I read a good article on SI about this I wasn't into boxing for most of De La Hoya's career but many boxing analysts believe he never truly reached his peak because he was too much of a showman, which isn't a bad thing.

But he would try to out brawl a brawler, out jab a jabber things like that where he wouldn't stick to his style.

Sad to see him go though, but he'll remain active and hopefully become a full time trainer one day.

I don't think he was an amazing boxer. He lost most of his big fights. However you cant doubt he was a massive attraction. Just look at his box office takings.

Re: De la Hoya calls time on career

De La Hoya won 13 different title belts in his career over 7 weights in his career.

That is losing most of your big fights?

Re: De la Hoya calls time on career

He lost to Mayweather, he lost to Trinidad, he was demolished by Pacquiao, he was completely destroyed by Hopkins. Those were his biggest fights. Probably with the exception of Chavez and Whittaker, those guys where bigger than anyone he beat for a world title.

Im not going to say De La Hoya isnt great. Of course he is. But he is not in the league of Robinson, Leonard, Hopkins, Jones Jr, Hearns etc etc.

Re: De la Hoya calls time on career

With the exception of Trinidad and the first fight with Mosley, all of those fights were later on in his career where he was basically trying to be a showman as Suffy explained and mostly holding on for some money.

But he is 7/8 years younger than Hopkins, and he had his arse completely handed to him.

Basically my point is that he is not in the same bracket as the fighters i mentioned above, and more

No the point is that not everyone holds onto what they had as they age.

I think I know what my point was mate. De La Hoya is not an all time great boxer. He was a huge box office attraction. But put him in the ring with Robinson, Leonard, or even Hopkins, Jones or Calzaghe, and he doesnt compare.

Re: De la Hoya calls time on career

I said the point not your point for a start.

If you put him in the ring on his form that he had in the past years before he retired then yes he wouldn't compare, in his prime I would have to see it to beleive he wouldn't put up a hell of a fight.
