I really want to care about the ASG, I really do, then I look at the rosters, and I just can't... Tim Wakefield in the ASG? c'mon.... this is getting a bit ridiculous, and the worst part is, I can't blame the traditional idiotic fans for it

Re: The MLB 2009 Season Thread

Tim Wakefield is 10-3 so far this year with two complete games. He's tied in the AL for wins. Why wouldn't he be in the game?

And ya I realize his other stats aren't really there, but he's been a solid pitcher for a long time now. His ERA is high, he doesn't have many strike outs, but he's kept the Red Sox going when they've had some issues with pitching Dice-k is having a horrid year, & Lester is struggling. Wakefield's 10 wins isn't a fluke either, last year he got screwed over in about 6 or 7 games which he should have won. Probably could have been around 14-8 or so if the bullpen didn't have issues. Previous year he was a 17 game winner. He's had over 10 wins in 7 out of the last 8 years.

Re: The MLB 2009 Season Thread

His enormous ERA and WHIP? The fact that wins is probably amongst the worst stats to judge a pitcher by? Uhhhh... yeah, there's plenty of reasons. In fact the fact wins is the only thing he's got going for him really is a reason...

Re: The MLB 2009 Season Thread

I can't believe that Dustin Pedroia is getting in ASG over the Blue Jays's Adam Lind, Lind has carried the Blue Jays' hitting while they were 1st in the AL East, he's hitting around .315 BA and still has yet to dwindle down so far this season.

Pedroia is so damn overrated to me...

Re: The MLB 2009 Season Thread

Pedroia got in by homer vote, and even so, Adam Lind should've gone over an OF not a 2B. Kinsler was snubbe more than Lind.

Kinsler definitely got that vote since he's on a winning team, but what gets me is Josh Hamilton getting the starting vote snubbing out Torii Hunter from the ASG also.

It's a feel good story, he's basically the last guy on the All-Star roster. If anything the only guy who has a case is Weaver. And there's a past with Madden, and Weaver. So that was probably a personal thing.

Look at prior all-star games fuck Ripken was batting like 230 getting on all-star teams.

I highly doubt Wakefield even pitches anyway in the game. Pretty incredible to see a pitcher his age winning like he is.

And when it comes to an ASG, it should be the best players, not the best feel good stories. The entire point of the ASG is to showcase the best players of the season(or at least, that was my understanding)

And Ripken was getting in on fan votes probably, your point is? Nothing? Didn't think so... this happens every year, with a bunch of players, Josh Hamilton this year most notably(as mentioned above) Look at the NHL ASG, the starters for both sides were pretty much jokes.

How is it incredible to see a pitcher his age win!?!?! If the Red Sox score 6 runs behind him, he can give up five and still win, wins mean absolutely nothing when it comes to individual player performance. Maybe if he had a high k/9 ratio, or a great era+ i'd be more compelled to be impressed with performance at his age, but it's not impressive unless you actually think wins is an important stat(when judging an individuals performance)
