They didn't let him slip away. They gave him away to cut his contract. Be happy Halladay didn't go. They would have been the AL's version of the Pirates. Everyone good would have been gone.
I was referring to trading away the entire team and playing with triple-a talent, which is what the Pirates did and is what the Jays would have done, had Halladay been traded.
He was never that good? He's never had good sabermetric numbers, and his FIP has amazingly remained the same, so it pretty much boils down to the fact that he had amazing defense, and a good lineup support, and a fresh arm. He no longer has any of those.
