I was having a long distance debate about this which lasted almost three hours. Well it kind of lead to this. With Chris Bosh pretty much being out of Toronto along with Jermaine O'Neal in 2010, the Raptors have around 21 million dollars coming off the books. In 2010 teams are going to be looking to sign big name free agents like Chris Bosh, Lebron James, Steve Nash, and so on.
I was looking at some of the most fun teams to watch in the NBA today, and one thing they all have in common is their star player. Its a point guard! Hornets have chris Paul, Jazz have Williams, Bulls have Rose, Suns have Nash,Nuggets have Billups, the Warriors last year had Davis, and the Raptors have Jose Calderon.
Looking at 2010, I'd rather see BC follow the Suns formula and build around Jose Calderon. When you look at the Suns, their team seems All-Star stacked. However, take away Steve Nash and you get the Shawn Marion affect. Instead of looking for a huge name player in 2010 the Raptors should spend their 21 million dollars and build depth through role players. Big men rebounders, consistant three point shooters, a reliable back up PG, and a slashing SF. Long gone are the days of feeding the star player the ball, long live the day of the star player feeding the role players the ball. After all, to me, the best position to build around is the PG!
Now for those of you saying that Jose isnt a player to build around, last year he had the best assist to turn over ratio in the whole NBA. This season, while being injured, he stil managed to hit 87 straight free throws. Thats the best in the Raptors history (beating Billups), and second best in NBA history.

Million-dollar question: How many of those teams have won championships with those players? How many of those teams have been anywhere close?
Re: The best position to build an NBA team around?
True, none of them have won a championship, but then again. how many of those teams are in the lopsided East? When you look at the Hornets, Jazz, Warriors, Suns, they are always running into the Spurs, and Lakers. In the East the only seeming unbeatable team is the Celtics, but the Hawks took them to seven games last year. I know everyone is all on the Cavs nuts, but play zone and the Cavs struggle. Playoff time, anything can happen. Its not like the Raptors have a good history with All-Star players either. Vince, T-Mac, Demon Stoudemire, Chauncey Billups... Stephen A. Smith brought up a good point last night. All the stars are looking for money and they cant be marketed to their full potential in Canada so why would they want to stay here? Therefore, I think depth is the best bet for Toronto.

To be fair, most of them haven't even been in the league for more than a couple years. Chris Paul has nothing around him (outside of West who is 'ok') and the Hornets still gave the Spurs a great run in the playoffs last year.

To say the hornets have no one around Paul is an understatement. Tyson Chandler is a great player for CP3 and so is Peja. So West isn't the only good player around CP3, so I don't know what you were smoking.
Again, CP3 hasn't been in the league long enough and still has time to grow as a player and become better and lead his team to an NBA Championship. And for the person who said how many of them have rings, well lets look. The Hornets are playing great ball right now, maybe won't win the championship, but as long as Paul is on the team, they have a shot. Nuggets are experiencing their first team with a REAL point guard in Chauncey Billups. Williams is in the same boat as Paul, except for the fact that the Jazz aren't playing as well as they should be. I mean, I guess it doesn't really back up NeXus, but you should definitely build around a PG. But to leave Rondo out of the discussion for great Point Guards and put Jose in front of him, thats stupid. Jose is a great Point Guard but he is nowhere near Rondo, and Rondo is going to become much better. When KG, Ray Allen, and Paul are all gone, the C's are going to build around Rondo, mark my words. So I agree with you in a sense that PG is definitely the best to work your team around.
And also, it is Rose's first year on a mediocre Bulls team, I see the bulls playing great ball next year.

Re: The best position to build an NBA team around?
I don't think you need one position to build a team around. I think that you start throwing super stars in any mix and people go crazy. The Bulls were doing fine a couple of seasons ago and then the Kobe rumors started. Never saw a TEAM go to shit as fast in my life. Scottie Skyles had built a true TEAM and it was single handedly destroyed by John Paxton and that stupid Kobe bulllshit.
Re: The best position to build an NBA team around?
I left Rondo out because the Celtics are boring as hell to watch if your not a Celtics fan. Defense is just a snooze, especially when the Celtics and Spurs meet up. Notice how I said, fun teams to watch! To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

You can also leave Rondo out because of the wealth of talent that surrounds him. Jose has put up crazy numbers with only Bosh at times compared to having Garnett, Allen and Pierce.

If you truly think the Celtics are boring to watch, then I don't know what your talking about. Raptors aren't not exciting to watch at all. Nuggets aren't that exciting, but any team with Billups keeps me on the edge of my seat. The suns are also the farthest team from an exciting team same with the Bulls. Bulls are a little bit more exciting then the suns. At this point in the NBA, the 76ers are the most exciting team in the NBA.
