So, you have a favourite band or artist and you adore everything theyve done. Then they begin to experiment, they try new styles, work with different artists. All of a sudden, they dont sound like the band you once knew and loved. Strangley enough, it feels like youve been let down.
Has this ever happened to you? Did you stay supporting them in the hope that they'd go back to their roots after the experimenting was over?

AFI for one has done this. I didn't mind it on Sing the Sorrow when they stepped away from their punk roots. But then they did DECEMBERUNDERGROUND and it sounded extremely...how do I word this,...homoerotic. Their new album takes a step back towards Sing the Sorrow but they're still really different. I miss their old punk/hardcore roots. Luckily, they released 5 albums with their punk/hardcore style and their bad stuff only weighs in at 2 albums really.
Fall Out Boy, they use to be this awesome pop punk band from Chicago. Released about 3 albums with their original sound then started getting more popular and started collaborating with a bunch of artists out of their genre, like Lil' Wayne. Their new stuff isn't bad and I think they've grown a little. But they're just one of those bands when I listen to their older albums I wish for another newer album with that kind of edge.

Sometimes bands experiment and produce better stuff. I personally prefer Youthanasia to any other Megadeth album (although I like most) and that was after they moved away from their thrash roots. Since Mustaine has tried to go back to their roots, they've just been boring. Sometimes innovation is a good thing.
I'm sure there are many examples of bands experimenting and starting to suck, but the only one that springs to mind for me right now is Theatre Of Tragedy, who went from like gothic metal to awful techno shit for a while.

The Fall Out Boy example is kind of like my situation. Even though I know the majority of you have no tolerance for dance music, my biggest love music wise is Tiesto. His new album has just been released and its disappointing. Recently, hes admitted to trying new things and working with new artists such as Bloc Party, Nelly Furtado, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Coldplay. Now, I love his remixes of some of the indie songs - they are good, but hes just become so 'pop-ified' its just not the Tiesto we knew and loved.
Its quite amusing on the forum, some of his fans are shunning him for good and calling him a sell out, saying hes becoming more commercial 'for the money' which I think is ridiculous, but amusing to read none the less.
I think its fine for them to be able to experiment, its their life after all, and if he wants to play a different kind of music then all power to them, I just wondered if anyone else had any examples to share.

I for one had this same problem with Thrice. Everything pre The Artist In The Ambulance was amazing; however, post Vheissu, everything sucked. I was hoping that it was just a single cd experiment, but they then came out with The Alchemy Index, a TWO PART cd.

The Smashing Pumpkins are this way. I absolutely loved their first three albums, but they've gone downhill since, and this last album I couldn't stand.
I really hope they eventually go back to their old sound, but I doubt it, as all the band members have changed.
