Obviously we are all going to have a hell of a lot of music opinions that are unpopular with many other people, so I thought it would be fun to have a thread to share them. Works just like the wrestling version.
But please keep posts like "rap is shit", "metal sucks" etc to a minimum, and be more precise. I'm personally going to talk about genres I like rather than genres I don't, because it goes without saying that I don't enjoy that music.
Here's one for Boogeyman and Nicky, among others, to get angry about....
Iron Maiden are in better form now (since Bruce's return) than they have ever been.

Completley incorrect. Im incredibly lukewarm towards Nirvana, and havve been since his death. And if you want to talk about their talent (apart from Grohl, who is musically superior to most) I can get on board with that.
But to say they werent revolutionary is just flat wrong. Smells Like Teen Spirit triggered the deth of Glam/Hair, and ushered Alt into the mainstream. PJ, STP, and the likes owes Nirvana for there breakthrough.

But being "musically evolutionary" is about creating something new, not simply popularizing something. So I ask you this - did Nirvana create the "grunge" sound? Or did they take a musical style that had festered quietly in Seattle for the better part of a decade and simply bring it to the mainstream?
I love Nirvana, but they did not create something new, as they are so often credited. They were simple the band who did it that style and sound very well and took it mainstream.

Pearl Jam is an incredibly overrated band, along with most of these grunge revolutionary type bands. I personally find most of their music boring, bar a few Alice In Chains songs.

Did they create the sound? No. But without them, would the music landscape be completley differnet today, absolutley.
Again, im not the biggest Nirvana blowhard. I think Cobain was incredibly overrated. But Id never try to take their place in music away from them.
Heres an opinion for you. Since 2000, we've seen the death of hip hop, Punk Rock, and Metal as creative musical genres.

The same could be said for the Beatles in the early years. Also the same could be said for Elvis Presley. That doesn't change the fact that what they did was revolutionary. I don't think it necessarily entails "creating something new".

The landscape would be different... but how different? Would grunge fail to go mainstream, or just hit a bit later in a slightly different manner? Is it possible that Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains would have still become stars, perhaps even bigger than they did? I think so.
When I think of a band or artist that was truly revolutionary, then I think of one who actually changed music, not just altered the popular music landscape. You can't take away the influence and role of the Rolling Stones, but would rock n' roll have failed without them? No, it would've still happened. Maybe somewhat differently, but it would still be there. But would punk have happened without the Pistols and Ramones? Would metal have come through without Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin? Those bands were more revolutionary, in my mind.
I'm not trying to take away from Nirvana and their legacy. I came to truly love music right in that era and I recall hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time back in 1991. I'm not trying to take away from what they did, but simply find that many music fans - whether they are actually Nirvana fans or not - tend to overvalue their contributions. Some seem to attribute to them Velvet Underground level influence and change, and I don't see it.
I don't know that we've seen the utter death of creativity in those geners so much as we've seen a focus on the less creative. I think the creativity has just become less mainstream and tougher to find. Stifled, not necessarily dead. Much like Hollywood giving us endless remakes, sequels, and cookie cutter films, record companies are playing it safe and want to put out an album they know will sell - which means they want the same album as last time and the time before.
