I don't know if they are alternative, but Senses Fail is a great band. Some songs to check out are:

Buried a lie
Lady in The Blue Dress
Calling all Cars
Garden State

Prolly some more but I cant think of them.

alternative bands are bands like breaking benjamin, 12 stones, crossfade, trapt, fuel, forty foot echo, etc

My favourite band is easily Muse, and I guess they could be classified as alternative rock.

All of their songs are great, but some I would recomend to get into them are;
Hysteria
Supermassive black hole
Plug in baby
Knights of Cydonia
