Couture Returns to Defend Heavyweight Crown against Lesnar on Nov. 15
by Thomas Gerbassi
If we’ve learned one thing in combat sports, it’s to never say never. This old adage was solidified once again today, as UFC President Dana White announced the November 15th return to the Octagon of heavyweight champion Randy Couture to face Brock Lesnar in the main event of UFC 91 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The announcement comes after nearly a year of contentious relations between the organization and Couture, who walked away from the UFC in October of 2007 with two fights remaining on his contract. But in August, the heavyweight champion and the organization worked on a renegotiation of his contract that will enable ‘The Natural’ to finish his Hall of Fame career with the UFC.
This is HUGE. And not only is he coming back he's taking on LESNAR?
I haven't posted in the MMA forum for a while, but I mean, this is something worth mentioning.
He needed a payday, he realized he wasn't going to win any legal battle, and now to pay for his lawyers he needed a big payday and that's what Lesnar offers.
I am no longer a fan of Couture I hope Brock beats on him badly.

first off: I've liked brock because of his wrestling background and I have history with him. Though I will admit that him doing well in his last fight impressed me far more than his previous one >_>
second: die.

Couture was loved by all, he came back at 44 years old beat Tim Sylvia and Gabriel Gonzaga, two opponents much bigger than himself.
At the time when he beat Gonzaga (last august) the UFC was trying to sign Fedor the number 1 heavyweight in the world. Couture really wanted the Fedor fight along with the entire mma world. It fell through the UFC couldn't sign Fedor so Couture opted out of his contract so he would have the chance to fight Fedor.
Now keep in mind around this same time the UFC had just brought in Big Nog the second best heavyweight in the world. Couture vs Nog is a dream match.
After Couture opted out of his contract a big legal battle ensued, with lots of people saying Couture only had two fights left on his contract he could have easily completed both of them (one of which would have been against Nog), and then went on and fought Fedor. But no he went on and had a big contract dispute, still holds the Heavyweight Belt (though that's UFC's doing) and now when he returns he still doesn't face Nog, he faces Lesnar.

Hmm I don't see Counture being bullied like Herring... my question is, why is he defending the title against Lesnar, I'm not questioning the fight, just the title being on the line, we have an interim champ people.

Because Randy was never stripped, and the winner of this fight is facing the winner of Nog/Mir (something not mentioned in this artical?)
Randy should get ragged dolled, he sooo small compaired to Herring and Brock made herring his personal mattress for three rounds. I know Randys got a good wrestling background, but come on now.

Granted, there's gonnabe some Couture hate but I think by holding out he sent a message to the UFC that they can't be treating their fighters the way they do. Dana White, dare I say it, made a compromise to get back Randy. But even though the UFC made a compromise for Couture, I doubt they'd do it for other fighters.
I hate the idea that Couture is fighting Lesnar in his first fight back. Because #1, Lesnar has only one win in the octagon and he's only 2-1 overall in his MMA career. He just doesn't deserve it as of yet. #2, if Lesnar winds up beating Randy, it really hurts the legacy of The Natural.
Still, I understand why they're doing this fight. We all know. It's all about the $$$.
It would have been so much better to see Big Nog VS. Couture, but hey, at least Randy's gonna fight again. But I hear it's gonnabe winner of Couture/Lesnar VS. winner of Mir/Nog. But if Randy loses either fight, he'll probably go on to face Fedor.
