Dr. Sherry Wulkan comments on Kaitlin Young and Scott Smith stoppage *Updated*
Quote:
After reading our interview with New Jersey Athletic Control Board legal counsel Nick Lembo, Dr. Sherry Wulkan contacted the NJACB with additional comments via e-mail. The NJACB forwarded that e-mail to us with permission to publish it.
I am making that e-mail available here, but I wanted to add that 5 Oz. of Pain contacted both Kaitlin Young and Scott Smith to get their sides of the story. Young declined to comment on the record at this time while Smith was unavailable for comment.
Here is Wulkan’s e-mail:
“When we saw Kaitlin in the cage, we were concerned about an orbital fracture. Both she and her corner were grateful that the fight was stopped and actually thanked us for stopping the fight. When she first returned to the dressing room, she said she wasn’t sure why the fight was stopped, but after looking in the mirror, she was glad we did. That is almost a quote verbatim. She said she was overwhelmed and that Carano definitely got the better of her on this occasion. I don’t read the blogs [Editor’s Note: Dr. Wulkan is referring to an alleged post by Kaitlin Young on FighterGirls.com, however, the post has yet to be verified as actually being authored by Young herself], but perhaps she was not well reviewed and this prompted the response you forwarded.
“We did not stop the fight because it looked ugly or because she was a woman, but because she had taken some major abuse, and because we were afraid she had a fracture. The risks of orbital fractures are well known to ringside physicians.
“Her response seems more like a vendetta for not being invited to the interviews . It’s a shame, because she presented herself very professionally both before and after the fight on fight night.
“As a follow up, Drago [editor’s note: Pete Sell] told me that Smith said he still was seeing double and triple 15-20 minutes after returning to the locker room. His corner was grateful we made the call we did. I want to know who told the press we didn’t pick up the foot injury at the time it happened. That’s just not precise reporting. I’m glad you cleared that up. I think it’s amazing that Smith himself, although initially disappointed, currently has no problem with the decision; he knows we’re professional and we have both their short term and long term interests at heart. At no time did we hear a complaint from Smith’s corner, so why are the blogs so insistent that an injustice was served? Besides, the rematch will prove to be a war, especially with two healthy fighters.”
Should clear up a lot, especially for people (People meaning Thew) who were ragging on her, the calls at the time of the fight still looked terrible though.
And listening to Big Johns latest podcast, Theres only 5 minutes for low blows not eye pokes like Suffy thinks. Saying you can't see twice is asking for a fight to be stoped when theres no 5 minute rule.

When Smith comes out and says it I'll believe it. And I'm just repeating what Frank Shamrock and the other announcer were saying during their broadcast.

You know, I always thought Big John was kind of stupid for his whole "LETS GET IT ON!" thing, but listening to him on Mauro Ranallos radio show/Pod cast always proves to be suprisingly Informal about situations like this . People still don't get theres no 5 minute rule for Eye pokes suprisingly even the commentators didn't. If Scott Smith had been told before the fight to word things a certain way if he wanted to keep fighting (something Big John does before fights is explain the lingo), he could have kept fighting probably .
I can live with these two decisions now that there explanded by Big John and the doctor, Kimbos still was a terrible one, no matter how much explaining gets done.

New Jersey Athletic Commission Shooting Themselves In The Foot
Quote:
After the EliteXC event on Saturday, the New Jersey Athletic Board went into damage control mode, with mouthpiece Nick Lembo, doctor Sherry Wulkan, and ref Dan Miragliotta making the rounds to sell the fact that they were 100% perfect and justified in all their actions. The problem is: each of them have told a few white lies which drag down the legitimacy of everything else they say.
First let’s look at Dan Miragliotta, who claimed James Thompson pushed him because Thompson thought he was still fighting Kimbo. This is about the most insulting lie of the bunch because it’s so blatantly untrue. Anybody watching the event saw Thompson stop fighting and then REACT to Miragliotta waving off the fight.
Next, let’s look at doctor Sherry Wulkan, who claims that both Scott Smith and Kaitlin Young thanked her in their locker rooms for stopping the fights. While we’re still waiting to hear from Smith (who sure looked super happy that the fight was stopped at the time), Kaitlin Young has responded:

Here’s the deal: I’m not against the majority of the decisions that were made last Saturday. The NJAC knew they were on CBS being watched by millions and they took extra steps to make sure nothing would happen to damage their reputation or the reputation of the sport. But by being dishonest and trying to twist the fighters’ words and actions to justify their decisions, it just makes them look like they’re trying to cover up incompetence.
Honestly, they should have just come out and said “Of course the fighters don’t agree, the fighters are fucking idiots. Kaitlin Young would have gone out and had her face split open hardcore. Scott Smith was willing to fight with one eye. And of course Thompson was angry with the stoppage. He lost. Fighters are simply too involved at the time to make reasonable assessments of their situation, and that’s why athletic commissions exist: to do it for them.”
This isn’t the first time the NJAC has responded to a fighter’s accusations with a version that makes them seem less like assholes. Before I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but now … not so much.

Sam Caplan: After Dan Miragliotta had stopped the fight and rendered his decision, you put your hand on him. According to Nick Lembo in an interview I conducted with him on Monday, he said he spoke with Miragliotta and that he had said he felt you weren’t even sure who he was and that you didn’t know the fight had been stopped. Did you know what was going on and did you intentionally put your hands on Dan Miragliotta?
James Thompson: You see, this is what almost is the most annoying to me, is the fact that I was just so disgusted and that I was so in shock by it. In disgust, I kind of shoved him. I went to shove him away and I caught his face. Now, I did that completely knowingly and completely purposely. It’s kind of like they take pity on me. Someone said “Oh, I think he thought I was Kimbo.” It’s even more insulting. Don’t get me wrong, I was rocked. But I was completely coherent. I saw him stop it; I followed his hands; I looked right back (and) I said to him, “What are you doing?” For him to say that he thought I thought he was Kimbo is absolutely ridiculous. I’d rather just get fined if that’s the case. For him to say I thought he was a black man with a beard… it’s insulting, basically.
Interesting read, I think suffy caught on to the docs bullshit first so good for him.
