Former NFL Pro Bowler and the only six-time champion in NCAA wrestling history Carlton Haselrig (1-0) finally has an opponent for the May 31 EliteXC event: New Jersey native Carlos Moreno (5-2).
The event, "EliteXC: PRIMETIME," takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The five-fight main card will be televised on CBS as the first-ever MMA event to air on major U.S. network television.
Most of the preliminary card, including the Haselrig vs. Moreno bout, airs live on ProElite.com.
The organization officially announced the Haselrig vs. Moren fight on Wednesday.
Haselrig, a four-year NFL veteran and six-time NCAA champion Greco-Roman wrestler (he won three titles at both the Division I and Division II levels), made his MMA debut in April 2008 and defeated IFL veteran Shane Ott with a first-round TKO.
"Couple his fantastic experience in college wrestling with his dedication, power and brute strength, and it's easy to see why many give Carlton a legitimate chance to make the difficult transition from football to MMA," EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw stated about the 42-year-old fighter. "But this is a tough fight for him."
Moreno, 30, had posted a three-fight win streak before an October 2007 submission loss to UFC veteran Kevin Jordan. The five-year MMA veteran, who's posted stoppages in all five of his career victories (four via KO), hasn't competed since that loss.
A former NFL player huh? Could be interesting.
