UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was in Curitiba, Brazil on Tuesday following the death of his aunt. Her name was not immediately available, but a source close to the fighter confirmed that the woman had raised Silva from his youth and that he thought of her as his mother. She passed away Monday.
Last weekend, Silva, widely considered to be the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, cancelled a seminar at Miletich Fighting Systems in Houston. However, Silva attended the opening of a gym he co-owns with UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Pictures) in Miami on Friday and Saturday. The incidents resulted in heavy criticism as some felt he had invented his aunt's illness.
According to the source, Silva was already in Miami for the opening ceremonies of his gym. He learned of his aunt's condition on Friday and reportedly tried to leave for Brazil on Saturday morning, but there were no flights. He then went to his gym for a few hours before flying to Curitiba in the evening.

We want to issue an official statement regarding the seminar that was suppose to take place this weekend with Anderon (sic) Silva. We received a phone call last night (Friday) from Anderson's manager Ed (Soares) informing us that the seminar was going to be canceled due to a personal family health issues. Obviously we were taken a back and concerned for Anderson and his family. We were also very disappointed for all of our students and fans who had planned to attend our seminar this weekend.
It was brought to our attention this morning (Saturday) that Anderson and (Antonio Rodrigo) Nogueria (sic) are both having a two day seminar at their grand opening event in Miami. If this is true then we have been completely mislead (sic) and as you can imagine we are furious at this. We are doing our due diligence to confirm that this is really happening. If this is true we will take all legal recourse possible.
We are extremely sorry for all those who planned on attending this event!"
Oh Sammy

Still quite shook up after his mother death, Edite Silva Cardoso, with 74 years in the early hours from Monday to Tuesday, Anderson Silva talked with TATAME just after the burial held this Wednesday. "Unfortunately when I left , Tuesday for a meeting with Dana White about the fight against Roy Jones Jr., that will not happen, my mother had been hospitalized a week ago due to his diabetes and high pressure, but the doctors have left me calm, that after putting up a pacemaker the situation would be normalized. During the week, however, things got worse and when I arrived Miami , I decided to got back. I arrived at Curitiba Monday at midnight and she died at 5:30 pm in the morning”, said the champion who was forced postpone a seminar near the date, which has room for rumors on American sites that that the Brazilian would be with Minotaur at Miami. Without knowing, Anderson was surprised, but nevertheless, with the humility that it is peculiar, he apologized himself. "I would never do something like that. Everybody who knows me knows that I does not usually arrive late, I never break my commitments, but we just have a mother in our lives, when I knew that her situation had get worse I asked to my manager to disarrange everything and I come back Curitiba . I apologize to those students who are expecting me at the seminar and I promise to return soon to fulfill the commitment", assured the UFC champion.
