"The road to victory sometimes leads to a path of defeat" - JadedX
In the world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), there is the three keys of winning / losing a fight;
1. TKO / KO (Technical Knock Out / Knock Out) -
Delivered or at the recieving end of a hard kick or punch ; repetitive strikes. Or unwilling to continue. 2. Submission -
Caused or submitted to a lock, or hold that is painful. Forced to tap out due to sustaining overwhelming pain via a lock/hold. Falling unconcious. 3. Decision -
Three judges score either majority or split via a 10/9 point system per fighter per round.
But, that isn't necessarily the case, as there are other keys to victory, or defeat. For example, the referee could stop the fight on judgement call, be it good or bad, he has that right. Just a few months back, Anthony Johnson loss a fight via TKO, but in actuallity, he should have won via DQ. His opponent unintentionally poked him in the eye, and that poke in the eye finisher comes after being warned numerous times not to poke in the eye, seeing it's an illegal move, and all. Case in point, the referee has that right, regardless how we feel about the call made.

Bad calls are usually made by the referee. Whilst made in good intensions, so it seems according to him, sometimes it isn't the best intention, at all. But not all calls made are bad. Sometimes, I feel referee's just can't catch a break. When they make good calls, some hate them for making it. When they make bad calls, we all hate them, even more. Does the fans ranting for justice have any impact on the calls they make? Honestly, I believe so. Just as the fans have an impact on the fighters performance, in some cases. Their rants, be it cheers or boos, does have an over-all effect on both the fighters, and the referee.
What about a cut? Yes, a fighter can win or even lose a fight at the hands of a cut. It really depends on how bad the cut is. A fight could end within seconds due to a cut, even in the 1rst round, as it did when Randy Couture loss his UFC LHW title to Vitor Beltor some years ago. All it took was an accidental headbutt, a cut from it, and presto, a new champion.

A cut can pretty much happen at any moment, at any time, and at any position. The most notiable would be an elbow to the head of a downed opponent, whilst both fighters are on the ground working for top position or from the guard. This can be fixed, however. Easily, by simply taking it away. The rules imply no knees to the head of a downed opponent, so why not no elbows? Sucks when a fight is stopped due to a cut, and believe it or not, majority of striking elbows are done for the intentional purpose of cutting the opponent. Alistair Overeem, whilst on the ground, top mount, uses slicing elbows with the intention to cut his opponent. He, himself have said it's his intention to do just that, to cause his opponent blurriness, pain, and a short route to a TKO or submission. But he left out the part a stoppage due to a cut.
How's about an Injury? Corey Hill, just recently loss a fight via TKO courtesy of a leg kick, which was checked by his opponent, then broke. And I literally mean broke. Ouch!

An injury is quite possibly the worst way to lose a fight, but it depends really. Patrick Cote loss via TKO to Anderson Silva not so long ago. The TKO didn't come from the hands of the KO artist Silva, but from a blown ACL. There's no real way of preventing this, because injuries happen. And regardless of how fighters train, it's pretty much inevitable that an injury will occur.
Let's say Anthony Johnson, Randy Couture, Patrick Cote, and Corey Hill was planning to retire from the sport after those said fights, is that the way they would want to be remembered? Loss by a bad call, a cut, or an injury. What about the winners, do they want to be remembered for winning in those fashions? Each of those winners was actually boo'd right out of the building, especially Vitor Belfort. It so happens though, none have retired, yet. Johnson gets a rematch at the TUF Finale, this weekend. Couture got his rematch, in which he won and regained the LHW title after 5 rounds of outclassing Belfort. Patrick Cote is heading for surgery and is confident he'll return very soon as early as the end of this year, and hopes to get another shot at Silva for the UFC MW title. As for Corey Hill, according to reports, it's likely he'll return to the sport after he recovers from the injury.
