What a bullshit decision to end the fight so early. It was as if the ref wanted to find a way to give Kimbo the win.
Thompson defiantly exposed Kimbo. I've never been a fan of his, and tie that into the fact that a work college of mine is good friends with James Thompson, I really wanted "The Colossus" to end the over hyped Slice.
I'm not saying Thompson would have won if the ref hadn't of stopped it, because he was eating some nice shots, but I think it was Kimbos finally flurry before he totally gassed out.
If anyone wants links, I can find some from YouTube if you're interested.
Not that I care.. but you have to believe that something fishy was going on with that ref. First, Kimbo isn't even defending himself, taking 329294 straight elbows to the head and there's no stoppage.. I'll agree that most of the elbows were pussy, but any other guy would have lost the fight right there.. and then, Kimbo is awarded the victory after a very shaky stoppage. Thompson's ear was fucked, but he was still ready for action.
Is this something we can come to expect in fights involving their "cash" cow?
Yeah I agree that the finish was the worst possible kind for Elite - it definitely made Elite look more like an organization that's more interested in telling you who to like rather than just letting pure competition do the talking (remember how many people were on the Gonzaga bandwagon?).
I was also rooting for Thompson to win. Nothing against Kimbo - for whom I actually gained a lot more respect for after his soft spoken interview that made him really seem like a nice guy rather than a thug - I would really like to have him grounded for a bit just out of respect for the other fighters. The Frank Mir bitchslap that the UFC gave Lesnar (I know that Mir wasn't a lock to win, but his style matched up against Lesnar really well) really showed that they weren't about to become star stuck with the Lesnar signing. Lesnar humbly and graciously took it, and now I'm an even bigger fan of all three (Lesnar, UFC, and Mir).
Anyone not named Kimbo Slice would have lost the fight to TKO in the end of the second round when he clearly wasn't defending himself for almost a whole minute. Thompson was losing round 3 when it was called, but we'll never find out what would have really happened. Oh well, so much for a competitive match. At least it all went according to the EliteXC script for the fight.
Yeah, it's too bad that the first nationally televised MMA event on netowrk television had to be a third rate promotion that wants to turn the sport into Sports entertainment..
the CBS executives should be kicked in the balls one by one.
Yeah sorry man, I was out of line for accusing EliteXC of rigging the fight. Although, it sure did look like Kimbo was receiving preferable treatment (and yeah it happens with UFC too). They're a young organization and I want to give them every benefit of doubt. But for their main event on their debut card on national TV, they sure didn't need that kind of controversy.
Since it was on CBS, I would say they played a part in the stoppage.
There is only so much they are going to show on Live TV and someone's ear exploding on TV is not the best way to expose new fans to MMA. They are not going to let a bloodfest happen on live TV.
