For the first time in three years, former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia (Pictures) will compete outside the Octagon.
The 6-foot-8 mixed martial artist announced his departure Friday evening during an appearance on HDNet's "Inside MMA."
"I've pretty much come to a crossroads in my career," Sylvia said. "And there's a lot of big things happening in the MMA world, and especially outside of the UFC."
As Sylvia, 32, spoke of the move -- which came with the UFC's blessing despite one bout remaining on a contract that was set to expire in July -- the No. 4 ranked heavyweight according to Sherdog.com was announced as officially joining Adrenaline MMA, a newly-branded promotion headed by his manager, Monte Cox...

Wow, I think I read a rumor or two about this, but it's still a bit of a shocker when it finally happened. Sylvia has been one of the consistent and home grown (right?) faces of the UFC, it'll be really weird seeing him fight anywhere else. Still, I wish him the best, and looks like the MMA world is just starting to get more interesting!
I say "go for it". He's lost 2 of his last 3 (to Couture and Nog) so chances are if he were to resign with the UFC, he may have been offered a pay cut. As a free agent or non-exclusive fighter, he'll probably be able to pull in more money than he did in the UFC because he'll likely fight more often.
I'm honestly not a big fan of Sylvia but he's still a quality heavyweight and his size gives people problems. I happened to catch his interview on Inside MMA and saw that he was actually toying around the idea of fighting Fedor, which, I think, would result in Sylvia getting another arm broken.
I know other MMA companies like Elite XC, Strikeforce and DREAM are excited now with HW free agents flying around like Fedor, Sylvia, Ben Rothwell and Andrei Arlovski.
There'll be no sorrow there, no more burdens to bear,
No more sickness, no more pain, no more parting over there;
And forever I will be with the One who died for me,
What a day, glorious day that will be.
