UFC 74 Thoughts

Randy Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga

This was pretty much how I expected this fight to turn out. Couture just overpowered Gonzaga and dictated the pace of the fight. The slam was the turning point in this match and unfortunately caused some controversy. Randy Couture said that during the slam their heads collided and he heard Gonzaga’s nose break. Upon review of the slam however, it appears that Gonzaga's own knee hit him in the nose and did the damage. Either way that was the turning point and Gonzaga couldn't do much after that. The blood was keeping him from breathing through his nose so he was breathing through his mouth the rest of the fight. There was one point where Gonzaga got Referee Herb Dean to stop the match because he "couldn't see". The blood didn't seem to be getting into his eyes since it was coming from his nose so I think he was just frustrated. Herb Dean asked him "Can you fight?" Gonzaga replied "yes" and then Dean said something along the lines of "Then fight, we can't stop the match for things like this". Gonzaga did get one good high kick on Couture and that scared me for a minute, but Couture took the kick and went on to win.

This fight should not be marred by the supposed accidental knee because Couture dominated. I really hope the UFC is able to sign Fedor because Couture/Fedor is a dream match.

Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck

I was really hoping to see Koscheck take a beating here. He didn't really take a beating, but he was dominated. GSP got back on track with this win and showed why he should get another shot at the Welterweight title. He took Koscheck down at will and that is no small feat considering that Koscheck is a four-time NCAA Division I All-American Wrestler. GSP took it by unanimous decision.

Patrick Cote vs. Kendall Grove

Kendall Grove's inexperience showed in this match. In several of Gove’s past matches it looked like he was going to lose but somehow he managed to come back and win. This was not the case this time. Cote landed a devastating right hand to end this one by TKO in the 1st round

Joe Stevenson vs. Kurt Pellegrino

This fight was back and forth. I expected to see Stevenson win this one pretty easily but that was not the case. Stevenson almost finished the fight once but it ended up going to decision and Stevenson picked up the win.

Alberto Crane vs. Roger Huerta

Roger Huerta looked good in this match. His cardio was great and he just wore Crane out. By the third round Crane was barely able to move and Huerta looked just as fresh as he did in the first round. Huerta picked up the win in the third round. I look to see Huerta in contention for the Lightweight title soon.

Thanks for keeping the UFC discussions alive Dak! It's been a few days now, so I can only really post some of the more memorable moments to me...

Huerta came off looking amazing in his match, so mission accomplished for UFC. Although Crane showed awesome BJJ in the first round despite being eventually outclassed by Huerta.

I thought Stevenson was going to have an easier time too. But I sure am glad he got the win in the end. What about a Huerta-Stevenson match next time? I don't want to see Huerta against new comers anymore.

I thought for sure that Cote was going to eat it in the match. But I rooted for him anyhow because he was the shorter guy.

My buddy and I are big fans of St. Pierre, and so were most of the guys at the bar at which we watched the PPV. We too wanted to see Koscheck have his ass handed to him. But we were also very very nervous for GSP. Not that we thought Koscheck had a snowball's chance in hell against GSP, but should GSP somehow end up with a freak loss that night, he'd be buried for a long time in that insane deep welter weight division... right next to Karo Parisian (sp). No one was breathing easy after the first round, as it was pretty even and Koscheck ended the round with more offense (and Koscheck was apparently awarded the round by 2 of 3 judges). Luckily we were able to down our beers that much more easily after that. Is it me, or did St. Pierre seem to shoot in for take downs much more frequently than normal?

I agree that Couture dominated Gonzaga as well. There was no question that Couture deserved the win. Gonzaga's "BrazCop" kicks in the third round gave me a good chuckle though.

Yes he did try quite a bit more take downs than usual. Part of his game plan though was to keep Koscheck on his back because he said that wrestlers are not used to being on their back.

Did everyone miss the big story of the night? Babalu's fantastic (and then downright evil) win over Heath?
I had a sig, once.

They did not show it on the PPV here.

I had to watch that on the net.

He admitted that he kept the hold on longer than necessary because that Heath disrepected him at the weigh ins and that he did it to teach him some respect.

I am surprised that he got booed as bad as he did.

Re: UFC 74 Thoughts

This was my first UFC event which I watched from start to finish and I loved it. We get them free over here too which is great.

I don't really know much about UFC but I enjoyed that St Piere bloke throwing that cocky kid around at will and I enjoyed the main event, although I have one question if someone could answer it.

Randy Couture has a record of 16-8 and is a 5 time UFC title holder, so he's .500. Yet there are some fighters with 20-2 records and they fight real low on the undercard, why is COuture seen as being so good when he has lost a lot of fights?

PS they showed a replay of that Gonzanga dude kicking some guy clean in the head and leaving his shit in ruins. WHat PPV was that from and can you DL them from anywhere.

Couture was a rather late comer to MMA he didn't get into it until he was 33 I believe. So all of his matches were pretty much fought in the UFC. Some of the other guys with records like 20-2 records fought with other organizations and that still counts as their overall MMA record. Randy Couture has fought more quality opponents since he spent most of his career in the UFC.

The replay you saw with Gonzaga was at UFC 70 and the guy he knocked out was Mirko CroCop. I am not sure where you could download it though. Mirko CroCop is well known for his kicks and it was very surprising for him to be knocked out by a head kick like that. You should youtube Mirko CroCop and watch some of his matches.

Good to see you posting in the MMA forum. Hopefully you will continue to watch MMA and post in here.

Yeah I will, I used to watch is years ago when I bought the video game but it wasn't on TV much, it is now though which is cool.

Also what is pretty outstanding is that Couture broke his arm in the 1st round.

Yeah that is amazing. He didn't even know it was broke until the next day either. It is also amazing that he is 44 years old and can man handle people half his age.

The guy is a true competitor.

That's the CroCop vs. Gonzaga match... no download needed for this one. It has a bit of Croation (I think) commentry, but you can still hear the US commentry team in the background.
