Randy Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
This was pretty much how I expected this fight to turn out. Couture just overpowered Gonzaga and dictated the pace of the fight. The slam was the turning point in this match and unfortunately caused some controversy. Randy Couture said that during the slam their heads collided and he heard Gonzaga’s nose break. Upon review of the slam however, it appears that Gonzaga's own knee hit him in the nose and did the damage. Either way that was the turning point and Gonzaga couldn't do much after that. The blood was keeping him from breathing through his nose so he was breathing through his mouth the rest of the fight. There was one point where Gonzaga got Referee Herb Dean to stop the match because he "couldn't see". The blood didn't seem to be getting into his eyes since it was coming from his nose so I think he was just frustrated. Herb Dean asked him "Can you fight?" Gonzaga replied "yes" and then Dean said something along the lines of "Then fight, we can't stop the match for things like this". Gonzaga did get one good high kick on Couture and that scared me for a minute, but Couture took the kick and went on to win.
This fight should not be marred by the supposed accidental knee because Couture dominated. I really hope the UFC is able to sign Fedor because Couture/Fedor is a dream match.
Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck
I was really hoping to see Koscheck take a beating here. He didn't really take a beating, but he was dominated. GSP got back on track with this win and showed why he should get another shot at the Welterweight title. He took Koscheck down at will and that is no small feat considering that Koscheck is a four-time NCAA Division I All-American Wrestler. GSP took it by unanimous decision.
Patrick Cote vs. Kendall Grove
Kendall Grove's inexperience showed in this match. In several of Gove’s past matches it looked like he was going to lose but somehow he managed to come back and win. This was not the case this time. Cote landed a devastating right hand to end this one by TKO in the 1st round
Joe Stevenson vs. Kurt Pellegrino
This fight was back and forth. I expected to see Stevenson win this one pretty easily but that was not the case. Stevenson almost finished the fight once but it ended up going to decision and Stevenson picked up the win.
Alberto Crane vs. Roger Huerta
Roger Huerta looked good in this match. His cardio was great and he just wore Crane out. By the third round Crane was barely able to move and Huerta looked just as fresh as he did in the first round. Huerta picked up the win in the third round. I look to see Huerta in contention for the Lightweight title soon.
