UFC "nicknames!"

Slam Wrestling had an article about fighter's nicknames.

Some of them are well known ("Iceman" for Chuck Liddell since he's cold as ice and emotionless before fights).

George St. Pierre said: “I got the nickname Rush because early in my career many of my fights wouldn’t make it past the first round. A TKO promoter at the time told me I was like a rush of adrenaline.”

Couture said "Natural" wasn't in reference to steroid- or drug-free, but rather because, “Joe Gold called me that after I beat Vitor Belfort the first time because I kind of adapted to his style and beat him standing up, which nobody expected. He said I naturally adapted to his style. He asked me if it was okay to call me the natural and I said ‘I’ve been called a lot worse.’”

Anderson Silva is the Spider because he loved Spiderman as a kid.

David Loiseau said: “L’oiseau in French means a bird and because I am black, kids at school used to call me Crow. A black bird.”

Jason "The Athlete" MacDonalds is the Athlete because he was always a good athlete!

And Big John McCarthy is called "Big" because of his great size and how big he is. Babalu is was Renato Sobral's favorite bubble gum as a kid.

Re: UFC "nicknames!"

Well I wouldn't be surprised if it was his coach/trainer that gave him the nickname not himself, like he was always chewing it before and after training...

Re: UFC "nicknames!"

I hope he didn't choose it himself. Its supposed to be the guys you train with or the public or commentators choosing your name. They can be silly, like Frank "Twinkle Toes" Trigg, given by his training partners I believe, or even "The Muscle Shark" which was the name the Japanese fans gave to Sherk, if you watch one of the early Bushido DVDs Bas talks to Sean about it, its a pretty cool moment.
