With another win in the Ultimate Fighting Championships and national television exposure under his belt, local mixed martial arts product Joe Lauzon is setting his sights on Hawaii.
Lauzon, a Brockton native who lives in Quincy, said he’ll likely be moving to the island in the fall or early next year to train with B.J. Penn, a legendary fighter out of Hilo who served as Lauzon’s coach on ‘‘The Ultimate Fighter’’ reality show, which wrapped up its fifth season June 23 on Spike TV.
‘‘B.J. and I are very, very similar in how we think about things, how he’s training and everything else,’’ said Lauzon, 23. ‘‘We hit it right off.’’
On the reality show, Lauzon lost to Manny Gamburyan in a fight that determined who would go on to the show’s finale June 23 in Las Vegas, where the winner of the show-long tournament was crowned.
Lauzon did, however, get a chance to mix it up June 23. He was paired against fellow reality show cast member Brandon Melendez, and defeated him via triangle choke in the second round. The bout was telecast on Spike TV.
‘‘I think that the fight went pretty much exactly how I thought it was going to,’’ Lauzon said.
The bout was the subject of some controversy as Melendez weighed in heavier than the 155-pound weight limit and was fined a percentage of his purse. $400 of the fine went to Lauzon.
Despite the weight discrepancy, Lauzon pulled through with a strong showing. He collected $16,000 for his win and an extra $16,000 bonus for ‘‘submission of the night.’’ UFC pays fighters bonuses for fight of the night, knockout of the night and submission of the night at each of its events.
Since the win, Lauzon has been taking it easy on the South Shore and doing mild training at Reality Self Defense gym in East Bridgewater.
‘‘Before I was going to uproot anything, I wanted to take it easy,’’ he said.
Lauzon said Penn urged him many times during the taping of the show to come to Hawaii to train.
Penn, who himself picked up a win in the main event June 23, is widely considered one of the most talented mixed martial artists in the world.
Lauzon said he plans to visit Penn’s training facility in August to see how he likes the place and plans to spend a year or two living there if he makes the move.
He said living and training with Penn, who is known for his complex personality, will be interesting. Penn was the first coach in the history of the ‘‘Ultimate Fighter’’ show to kick a fighter off his team because he didn’t think he was trying hard enough.
‘‘He does have that kind of alpha male personality going, he’ll tell you what he thinks is right,’’ Lauzon said. ‘‘He's clear with what he wants and what he thinks.’’
The Hawaii move would be the first time besides the reality show, which was filmed over several weeks in Las Vegas, that Lauzon has lived outside of Massachusetts.
‘‘If I’m missing home or whatever I'll take off,’’ he said. ‘‘It's tough to go away, but it’s really easy to come back.’’
The Melendez fight was the first fight on a nine-fight UFC contract for Lauzon. He expects to have one more fight before the end of the year.
No opponent has been pitched to him officially, but there has been buzz of matching him with lightweight contender Spencer Fisher. Fisher defeated Lauzon’s younger brother Dan via technical knockout in a UFC fight in October.
‘‘He beat my brother,’’ Lauzon said. ‘‘I want to fight him, he wants to fight me. Do I think it will be the next fight? I don't know. I'm cool with whatever they want to do. I'm invested for a long time with UFC.’’

Spencer Vs Joe would rock so hard, and it looks like BJs camp is getting better lately hopefully they start doing some big things in 08.

Well it's no secret that BJ did want Lauzon to win TUF, he was his favourite so it's no big surprise that he is going to train with him, Joe already has the skills, BJ could just enhance those for him and hey we could see a beatdown on Fisher.
