Could knees to the head of a downed opponent become a reality in Nevada?
The Nevada State Athletic Commission is open to discussion, says Executive Director Keith Kizer. Kizer held an open-to-the-public forum earlier this week in Las Vegas to field suggestions and comments regarding current MMA regulations utilized in the state. Though the turnout was dismal (one person attended the meeting), Kizer said he’d also been contacted via Internet.
“I got a couple of handful of emails from people that were very much fans of the former PRIDE organization and their rules all in the rash of a one week period,” said Kizer. “Twenty people want to go with the PRIDE rules and I guess about two million people are happy with the ‘Unified Rules’ based on the low numbers of emails I’ve gotten.”
No MMA promotion or fighter submitted comments or suggestions, Kizer confirmed.
From the feedback that was submitted, Kizer said he will draft a set of proposed rules changes in the coming weeks, which will follow with a public hearing in late August-early September after a 30-day notice period. Kizer was unsure if the proposed modifications would be minimal in nature or not.
Recent industry discussion has focused on the prohibition of knees to the head of a downed opponent, a regulation that was incorporated into the “Unified Rules of Combat” in New Jersey following a brutal contest between heavyweights Gan McGee and Brad Gabriel at a 2000 IFC event in Atlantic City.
Two months ago, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board had solicited feedback regarding the prohibited move and is reviewing the responses.
“First and foremost, we have to make sure that if that [rule] changes in that regard, can it be done safely?” said Kizer. “I don’t see soccer kicks ever being safe by the nature of the move, but knees to the head of a downed opponent – is it that different than elbows or punches to the head of a downed opponent? I don’t know, but it’s something we want to look at.”
Kizer said he’ll likely broach the subject with other Commission representatives next month at the ABC [Association of Boxing Commissions] Convention in Miccosuke, Florida.
“There will still be plenty of time to give input, not just by the public but also with the licensee themselves,” he added.

If you feel the same way help MMA and email >_>

Well I don't know, pounding someone on the ground with your first or elbow is one thing but with a knee I think it is a step to far, a serious injury is more likely to happen if knees are allowed on the ground...

I agree with Dmac, with the ever increasing popularity of MMA, UFC in particular, a death in the sport could ruin it for years, giving state Athletic Commissions more excuses to ban MMA. Punches and elbows are dangerous, but the legs are so much more powerful weapons, especially if you hit the top of the head, you could mess up the spine. I could possibly see knees being allowed from the side mount position, but never when an opponent is on there knees.

You have to ask yourself if a knee has ever seriously injured somebody in PRIDE? The only time knows were every really used then were to prevent turtling and to give wrestlers like Koscheck a second thought about shooting. Guys like Heath Herring and Fujita where the masters of that. No bodys ever been fucked up from a knee on the ground and your more likely to get fucked up from a knee from the clinch, just ask Rich Franklin and Marvin Eastman.
I myself hope they bring back Knees on the ground, people overrate how dangrous they "might be", Soccer kicks and Stomping is abit much I'll agree. But in all honesty, knees on the ground in the North/South postion are harder to get off then you think, because most of the time the other person will have hold of your leg and be pushing foward. MMA Fighters know what theyre doing your not going to see a bunch of knees raining down right on the top of some poor dudes head.
