Eyebrows were raised late last week when UFC light heavyweight standout Tito Ortiz mentioned in an interview that Randy Couture would be training with him for his July 7 bout against Rashad Evans, and hours later Couture’s camp issued a statement begging to differ.
Couture says Ortiz had approached him to join him for his traditional six-week training camp up in the Big Bear Mountains, but the UFC Heavyweight Champion politely declined due to his rigorous schedule. Couture explains he did not accept the invitation because of a perceived affiliation with Evans, though the in-demand coach and fighter did say Evans will visit his Las Vegas Xtreme Couture gym a couple times this week for training while teammate Keith Jardine prepare for his UFC 71 this Saturday.
“I think it’s a ploy to get in Rashad’s head and honestly I don’t want to be associated with all this bulls—t,” said Couture. “He [Ortiz] chooses to represent himself in a way I’m not comfortable with or want to associate myself with.”
On the other hand, Couture confirmed recent mumblings that former PRIDE Middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva might be joining him to train and possibly teach in Las Vegas.
“Wanderlei and I sat down with our wives and we had lunch in Ohio,” said Couture. “He’s a very nice guy and we are both very interested in getting together to train. I’m looking for some muay Thai influence to go with Xtreme Couture’s wrestling and other offerings, so there is a good possibility this could happen.”
Couture said there is also a chance Silva would be involved in the launching of Couture’s next Xtreme Couture facility in West Palm Beach, Florida in the coming months.
Very interesting <_< could Silva be thinking of coming to the UFC after learning some wrestling?
