Report: Barnett to fight for K-1
According to the Wrestling Observer, K-1/EliteXC has applied for a license to run their planned 6/2 show in Los Angeles with Brock Lesnar vs. Hong-Man Choi and Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Royce Gracie as the headline bouts. When they applied, one of the bouts submitted to the California State Athletic Commission was a heavyweight match between Josh Barnett vs. Sergei Kharitonov.
Both Barnett and Kharitonov have been with Pride up until now so I was taken for a bit of surprise when hearing the report. Apparently, Barnett's contract with Pride expires at the end of May and there are no more fights left on his deal. The departures of both almost signal an end to the days of Pride's stacked heavyweight division. I'd say they still have Fedor, but do they?
Barnett and Kharitonov may have signed for just one fight, so there's always the chance they could re-sign with Pride after doing the match. But who really knows what will happen in the current environment?
An attempt to reach Barnett last night for comment was not successful.
This is setting up nicely in my opinion, Brock Lesnars debut, Gracie Vs Saku now Barnett. Hopefully it does well amoungst the hardcore MMA fans.
