The Ultimate Fighter 1 alum and middleweight standout Mike Swick (10-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) will drop to 170 pounds and fight as a welterweight in his next fight, according to Sam Caplan.
Caplan, an MMA reporter for CBS Sportsline.com, made the announcement on his personal MMA site, fiveouncesofpain.com.
Swick most recently lost a unanimous decision to Yushin Okami earlier this month at UFC 69. The American Kickboxing Academy team member had posted a 5-0 record in the UFC prior to the fight and was considered one of the 185-pound division’s top contenders.
Although the loss (to a very solid opponent) wouldn’t have been a complete disaster in terms of getting a future title shot, Swick admits that he’s probably best suited for the lighter weight class.
Swick stated the following at fiveouncesofpain.com:
“I plan to fight my next fight at 170. I came in lighter than ever for this one and I think it’s best to drop.”
During UFC 69, which took place in Swick’s home state of Texas, broadcaster Joe Rogan mentioned that the tall-but-thin Swick would probably be a good fit in the UFC’s welterweight division. That prompted Caplan to reach out to Swick, who confirmed the move.
V_V, Swicks gonna get murdered there to
I found a poor man once
He was the age of fifty-three
He spoke about the government
And the thought of being free
What good does us reason if we fail to see?
What good does us freedom if we fail to be free
