Matt Serra and Matt Hughes will coach 16 welterweights during the sixth season of SpikeTV's The Ultimate Fighter, UFC president Dana White announced during the international broadcast of UFC 70 from Manchester, England on Saturday.
Serra captured the UFC welterweight title two weeks ago today by stunning Montreal's Georges St. Pierre with a first-round technical knockout, the first of the Long Islander's eight-year mixed martial arts career. "The Terror" earned his title shot by defeating Chris Lytle in the finals of TUF 4, a season in which Hughes appeared as a guest coach and sparked up a rivalry with Serra.
Hughes was the division's dominant champion before losing his belt to B.J. Penn in January of 2004. The Illinois born-and-bred fighter rebounded to win six in a row, including a title-reclaiming submission over St. Pierre in Oct. '04 after Penn walked away from the belt. Hughes lost the title to St. Pierre in their rematch last Nov.
Though a fight between Serra and Hughes was not announced, it has been TUF tradition for coaches in the same weight division to battle in the Octagon at the conclusion of the show.

holy crap...the UFC has too many welterweights as it is...they need to do another season w/ like nothing but heavyweights and/or light heavyweights. The welterweight division is already stacked, plus its really crowded, with over 50 WW fighters currently on the UFC roster, while there are even more lightweights than heavyweights or LHW's. Maybe if they search long enough they'll even find a match for liddell. maybe have a Comback 2 w/ LHW and HW?

The light heavy weight division is loaded with talent though. you have Chuck, Rampage, Tito, Jardine, Griffin, Rashad, Perhaps Brandon Vera, Sobral, that's just a few I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

Yeah, but WW is just as stacked, with GSP, Matt Hughes, Diego, Koscheck, Karo Parisyan, Jon Fitch, BJ Penn (after he fights Pulver), Matt Serra, and Josh Burkman. And each of these guys very close in skill, I'd say its the deepest division in the UFC right now, with heavyweight by far being the shallowest.
