Despite former welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre losing his title to Matt Serra at last weekend’s UFC 69 event, the UFC still plans to put on a show in Canada sometime during the calendar year, according to UFC president Dana White.
White says the amount of ticket sales and pay-per-view buys coming from America’s northern neighbor aren’t going unnoticed, and that the city of Montreal could be rewarded with a UFC event, according to Neil Davidson’s latest interview with the UFC’s boss.
St. Pierre defeated Matt Hughes in their rematch at UFC 65, and while the St. Pierre-Hughes rubber match was the intended headliner for Canada’s first show, White says that it’s just a requirement any longer. In fact, St. Pierre wouldn’t have to be a part of the show at all.
From the Canadian Press:
“Obviously it’s better if you have Georges St. Pierre on the card. Because you’ve got one of the best fighters in the world who is a Canadian fighting on the card. But I tell you, we can go there without any Canadians and still kick butt up in Canada.”
White still plans to put on a show in Montreal this year. The city already holds MMA cards via the TKO circuit, so it’s just a question of when.
“We’re ready to roll,” White said.
The Canadian ticket sales probably also played a large part in last month’s UFC 68 event in Columbus, Ohio. The UFCjunkie.com team met numerous Canadians — many of whom said the Columbus show had been the shortest drive to date — during the weekend festivities.
Rumored events in cities like Chicago, New York City and East Rutherford could also be a big draw with Canadian UFC fans.
