UFC 69: Shoot Out Results and Thoughts

Quote:
PRELIM FIGHT RESULTS

Fight #1:
-Luke Cummo vs. Josh Haynes

Round 1: Good first round. Haynes started off aggressive on the feet, throwing huge punches and solid leg kicks. Haynes got Cummo down but backed up to his feet. Cummo hurts Haynes with a combo on the feet.

Round 2: Cummo comes out with combos on the feet. Haynes is getting beat up and not doing much back. Cummo lands a huge punch that floors Haynes. The ref immediately stopped it. Haynes was out of it to the point that he tackled the referee.

Luke Cummo def. Josh Haynes via KO (punch) at 2:45 of Round 2.

Fight #2:
-Pete Spratt vs. Marcus Davis

Round opens with Davis taking Spratt down. Davis passed to side mount and takes Spratt's back after a scramble. Davis secures a body triangle but can't get the rear naked. As the round ends, Spratt escapes and finishes the round pounding on Davis.

Round 2: Spratt comes out guns blazing here in the second, before taking Davis down and working some ground and pound. However, Davis gets a leg and forces the tap out due to ankle lock submission.

Marcus Davis def. Pete Spratt via Submission (ankle lock) at 2:57 of Round 2.

Fight #3:
-Pete Sell vs. Thales Leites

Round 1: Leites starts the round off with a takedown. Leties working effective ground and pound before passing Sell's guard and taking his back. He's working for the rear naked, but Sell does good avoiding. They scramble up but Leites gets him down and in side control. Leites locks in an arm triangle, but Sell survives as the horn sounds to end the round.

Round 2: Leites lands a leg kick and big right hand in the beginning of the second. Sell goes for a standing guillotine, but drops to half guard. Leites gets out and lands some brutal ground and pound. Leites works an arm triangle, but no dice. Leites finished the round strong with bombs on top of Sell. Almost finished him, but we go to the final round.

Round 3: Leites dominates again. Got a takedown about half way through the round and just dominated on top the entire round. He was improving positions and working effective strikes from the top.

Thales Leites def. Pete Sell via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after 3 Rounds.

Fight #4:
-Heath Herring vs. Brad Imes

Round 1: Herring drops Imes flat on the ground with a huge left punch. Herring was dominating Imes badly on the ground with strikes for a likely 10-8 first round.

Round 2: Herring is landing at will on the feet. Imes is knocked down again by a punch. Herring lets him back up and then takes him down. Imes does some damage at the end, but still a Herring round.

Round 3: Imes scores with a punch and bullies Herring against the cage. Herring gets out, but Imes lands a knee. Herring has Imes on the ground in side control, and north south. Herring is knee'ing Imes in the shoulder on the ground. Ref stops action for a questionable knee to the head. Back on the feet, Herring lands a good body kick and Imes is just trying to land back, but isn't much. Herring takes down Imes and finishes the round on top.

Heath Herring def. Brad Imes via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after 3 Rounds.

LIVE PPV FIGHTS

Fight #5:
-Kendall Grove vs. Alan Belcher

Round 1: Not a terribly exciting first round. Probably a Grove round. He had a thai clinch several times and landed good kness to the body and thigh. He got a takedown at one point as well.

Round 2: Much better round. Grove opened Belcher up very baldy with elbows. He was bleeding pretty good. Grove was defending all the takedowns. He finished him in the end of the round with something like a chest-smother ala Ricco Rodriguez and Giant Ochai in early PRIDE days, but from half-guard.

Kendall Grove def. Alan Belcher via Submission (choke) at 4:42 of Round 2.

Fight #6:
-Mike Swick vs. Yushin Okami

Round 1: Not a great first round. A lot of feeling out, with neither guy landing much. Swick gets in too close and Okami gets him down and controls the rest of the round with ground and pound. He was landing good elbows and almost had a kimura at the end of the round. 10-9 Okami.

Round 2: Awesome action to close the round. Similar early on. A lot of slow exchanges on the feet, with nothing landing. Okami got him down twice, the second time the ref restarted too quick. On the feet with like 20 seconds left, Swick went nuts with strikes and almost had Okami out.

Round 3: 10-8 Okami. Total domination to finish the fight. The two were passive standing outside a few good exchanges. Okami gets Swick down and pulverizes him with ground and pound the entire round. Swick sweeps and gets on top in Okami's guard, but Okami controlled him from the bottom to ride the round out.

Yushin Okami def. Mike Swick via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) after 3 Rounds.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Dana White is in the cage now with a big announcement. He mentions acquiring PRIDE and putting on Superbowl-like fights. Dana announces a new signing for the Heavyweight division, former PRIDE champion Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira! Nogueira is coming out now to the traditional UFC ring-walk music. Joe Rogan asks him how he feels about coming to UFC, Nog says he's excited to come to the U.S. and show his skills. Crowd is giving him a nice reception during his interview, unlike Okami who was boo'd for talking through a translator. Nogueira is talking about fighting CroCop and getting a title shot, and promises to show the U.S. fans good Heavyweight jiu-jitsu.

Fight #7:
-Roger Huerta vs. Leonard Garcia

Round 1: Amazing first round. Both going insane on the feet with strikes, with Huerta getting the better. On the ground, Huerta on top was pounding the hell out of Garcia, but he'd scramble out and wind up on top. Awesome round, but definitely Huerta's.

Round 2: Holy shit. We got at least 10 people over here watching the PPV, and this round made them go nuts to the point that the cops gotta be coming for a noise complaint soon. I'll keep you updated. Garcia is the REAL DEAL! Very good round, but still Huerta's. Although much closer than the first. Garcia is a fucking animal.

Round 3: Amazing fight. Not as great a round as the first, nowhere close to the second, but by normal-fight standards - still a good round. Huerta dominated though this one, and should win a decision easily.

Roger Huerta def. Leonard Garcia via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after 3 Rounds.

Fight #8:
-Diego Sanchez vs. Josh Koscheck

Round 1: Koscheck all the way. Outside of one leg kick late in the round, Sanchez landed nothing. Koscheck was trying high kicks, landing jabs and one really good right hand. Koscheck took Sanchez down with 15 seconds left.

Round 2: Another Koscheck round, although very boring. Nothing much of note happened, other than pitty-patter shots mostly from Koscheck. Koscheck landed a mean jab late and missed a couple brutal high kicks.

Round 3: Should be a clean sweep for Koscheck. Another boring round. Nothing to write. After it ended, Koscheck did the same thing as on Ultimate Fighter when he beat Chris Leben, and Sanchez didn't look happy. Oh well, Sanchez did literally nothing the entire 15 minutes. Koscheck didn't do much either, but he did more and what he did actually landed now and then.

Josh Koscheck def. Diego Sanchez via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after 3 Rounds.

Fight #9:
-Georges St. Pierre (c) vs. Matt Serra (UFC WW Title)

Round 1: HOLY SHIT! Serra knocks out St. Pierre! NO I'M NOT JOKING! Close round early, Serra flurries late and hurts St. Pierre. GSP couldn't recover and Serra went insane with punches, landing more big bombs before flooring St. Pierre and following up for the finish.

Matt Serra def. Georges St. Pierre via TKO (strikes) at 3:25 of Round 1 to become the new UFC Welterweight champion.
Hrmkay......wow

Thing is, I like Serra...if it wasnt for him and Shonie Carter there would have been no reason to watch TUF 4 (The scene where Shonie and Matt are out in the back yard before there fight talking about Ice Cream is probably my favorite from the season). But GSP being my favorite fighter kind of bums me out that he lost it in such a fashion to someone who i believed was a lesser fighter, in his first defense none the less.

Kodus to Serra, I'm happy for him its just gonna take me awhile to get over the fact that he beat GSP lol

Re: UFC 69: Shoot Out Results and Thoughts

I did not think that Serra would win or that Koscheck would win.

Wow.

I am glad that I chose not to buy it now because it was really not that good. The Koscheck/Sanchez fight was the most boring 15 minutes I have ever watched in the UFC.......except maybe a Sylvia match.

I'm a good old rebel,
Now thats just what I am,
And for this Yankee nation,
I do not give a damn.
I'm glad we fought against her,
I only wish we'd won.
I ain't asking any pardon for anything we've done.
