Herb Dean has been the ref in a lot of the questionable calls in the UFC. Many feel that he stops fights too early. I know when I am watching the UFC PPV's and everyone sees that Herb Dean is the ref for that match everybody says "How's he going to mess this one up?" At the very least they should just have him ref under card fights or fights that no one really cares about, but they are letting him ref Main Events!

So what's the deal?

I think it's only a matter of time before Shamrock goes into the danger zone and kills Herb.

Is this the guy that stopped the second Shamrock-Ortiz fight, despite the fact that it was clear Shamrock could (and wanted to) continue to fight?

Here are the controversies he has done (from Wikipedia):

At UFC 48, held on June 19, 2004, Herb Dean refereed a bout between Tim Sylvia and Frank Mir for the vacant UFC Heavyweight Championship belt. At :50 of round one, the fight was called to a stop after Herb Dean saw a break in Sylvia's right forearm from an armbar by Mir. Sylvia claimed there was nothing wrong with his arm and wanted the fight resumed, but it was later found Sylvia had suffered multiple fractures.

At UFC 61, held on July 8th, 2006, Herb Dean served as referee of the highly anticipated rematch between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock. At 1:18 into the first round, Dean stepped in and stopped the fight following several consecutive elbows to the head of Shamrock by Ortiz, giving the victory to Ortiz by TKO. Shamrock, visibly angered, immediately protested the decision. However, it was not overturned and Shamrock was subsequently ushered out of the Octagon. A rematch was held during Ortiz vs. Shamrock 3: The Final Chapter with Ortiz once again claiming victory in a very similar fashion to the second fight, although Shamrock did not question this decision. At UFC 66, held on December 30, 2006, Herb Dean refereed a fight between Andrei Arlovski and Marcio Cruz. Arlovski landed an illegal head kick on the ground to Cruz, causing Dean to pause the fight momentarily. He began to stand the fighters up and warn Arlovski, but Cruz complained about wanting to keep the fight on the ground. Dean agreed to restart the fight in the same position, and once he let the fighters start Arlovski landed the big KO. Not as controversial as the others mentioned, but due to the position on the ground (attempted leglock) the fight needed to be stood up at that point.

Yeah, that was actually a good decision by Dean.

It didn't look like anything was wrong with Sylvia and the crowd booed the decision. But after viewing the replay you could clearly see that Sylvia's arm bent back the wrong way at the elbow.

It looked nasty! And Sylvia still wanted to fight.

None of his stops or decisions were wrong. The Shamrock this was a joke. Shamrock wasn't going to do a thing and would have eventually been knocked senseless. He wasn't defending himself and a ref has to stop a fight if that is happening.

Herb Dean refs all over the world and not just in the UFC. He is an outstanding world class Ref.

The fans don't have any idea what the ref sees in the ring, and unfortunately, he just happen to had to stop the fight at a point that wasn't pleasing to the fans.

I agree with the Sylvia one, but not Shamrock. Shamrock was defending himself and the fight shouldn't have been stopped.

Did you see his face after the fight? . And the fact that he got destroyed in the next fight the exact same way is even more funny.

I have seen a dozen other fights and refs stop a fight in the same manor.He wasn't fighting back, he was just sitting there taking blows. It is the refs job to protect the fighter, and seeing his face when he got up there is no way he was protecting himself.

Herb Dean can't second guess himself or a fighter could get extremely injured or worse. Herb Dean is also a MMA fighter so I am sure he knows when someone is done or is not doing anything to improve the position or defend himself. It is a fight not a cove up and try not to get hit.

Shamrock just likes to complain. Below is another example.

There was no controversy here. Everyone seems to agreed it was a fair stop.
