Brief History
The Fireball Kid, widely considered to be one of the best Light weights in the world of MMA and Light weight champion of PRIDE. Made his way through the famed Shooto organization almost undefeated until his last match where Gomi faced off agaisnt Joachim Hansen and BJJ Legend BJ Penn on the same night at two diffrent shows where Gomi would suffer his fist and second loss of his professional MMA career.
Since then a loss on Gomi's record has been few and far between in PRIDE. But where Gomi has found success many feel like Gomi has become cocky and dosnt take fighting seriously after winning the PRIDE light weight championship. Gomi would suffer another loss to Marcus Aurelio in a Non title fight raising questions to wether Gomi was a fit champion amoung PRIDE fans after Gomi squeezed out a split decision victory over Aurelio in a rematch.
Gomi who was making his US debut at PRIDE 33 was heavly hyped as "The Peoples Champion" in Japan. Gomi also made it clear that he was intent on taking on the best that America had to offer in BJ Penn, St.Pierre and Matt Hughes and beating them in the birth place of MMA, The uSA. Later that night Gomi would face Nick Diaz in his PRIDE debut. Gomi came out and gassed fast in the first round after a flurry of exchanges with Diaz that would ultimately drian Gomi of engry. Diaz would win shortly in to the second round by submission in a non title fight.
