At the age of 22 when MMA fighter Rampage was asked where he sees himself in 3 years, he famously said “Well, I’m 22 right now, so in three years I see myself being 25.” Oh how right he was.

Champ Joe Warren meets Pat Curran on March 9 at Bellator 61

Pat Curran's second shot at Bellator Fighting Championship gold will apparently come on March 9.

In a report for the "Chicago Tribune," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney tells Matt Erickson that's the date Curran (16-4 MMA, 6-1 BFC) will face featherweight champ Joe Warren (7-2 MMA, 5-2 BFC) for the 145-pound title.

The contest serves as the main event of Bellator 61 and takes place at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Ind.

As with all of Bellator's upcoming season-six events, Bellator 61 airs on MTV2.

Curran, of course, earned his shot at the belt after an impressive run through the company's 2011 "Summer Series" featherweight tournament, in which he dispatched of Marlon Sandro, Ronnie Mann and Luis Palmono.

Previously, Curran was the surprise winner of Bellator's season-two lightweight tournament, though in his bid for the 155-pound belt, he lost a decision to champion Eddie Alvarez.

Meanwhile, Warren returns to action for the first time since a September knockout loss to bantamweight Alexis Vila halted the featherweight champ's ambitious bid to also capture the 135-pound title. Prior to the loss, Warren boasted a five-fight win streak under the Bellator banner.

Bellator's upcoming sixth season kicks off March 9. The promotion is hosting season-six tourneys in the bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight and middleweight divisions. Each tourney winner gets $100,000 in total pay and a guaranteed title shot.
Pretty far away, lets see if that goes off as planned. Any thoughts?

Should be a pretty solid fight. I've really come around on Bellator - they have some great fights and the weekly shows is nice for the viewer.

Only seen Chandler/Gono so far but, damn, Chandler has fast hands. Of course, it's hard to get a read on how good he is from this because the fight was so quick and Gono has been done for a while, which Gono himself must have realized because he announced his retirement after the show. Chandler does have good wrestling credentials and with those hands it seems inevitable he'll make the jump up to the UFC at some point, but I'd like to see him against tougher opponents so we can see how good he really is.

    Re: The Bellator Thread

The problem with having to 'earn' a title shot is it makes it that much harder to put on title fights that would draw the most interest and be the most exciting. You've got to win three fights, usually tough ones, in a relatively short space of time, and then face the champion. Even the best of fighters is likely to come out of that banged up and not at their best, and that's why some fighters have said they want no part of the tournaments. It might have been Nate Marquardt or Eddie Alvarez, but I know there has been one potentially big title fight that Bellator has missed out on because the guy who would have challenged didn't want to go through the tournament.

It's nice from a sports standpoint to have fighters 'earn' title fights and it looks good in press releases, but when it prevents you from putting on the title fights that would mean the most and your fans want, it's probably time to step back and remember that you're still a business and as a business, you're sometimes going to have give people what they want and not what was necessarily earned.

But if that fighter is that good then shouldn't they have to prove it?

Also the tournament is one reason why I like bellator and not ufc because brock lesnar came into the ufc had what three fights and got a title shot.I remember hating that so mutch.

In an ideal sporting world, they would have to prove it, but this isn't a sporting world it's a business world and that sometimes means giving big fights or title shots to guys who haven't 'proven' how good they are or who haven't 'earned' it because it's what good business dictates.

As a fan, you have every right to complain about such things, but when you're running a business, which is what any sports promotion actually is, your primary goal is to stay in business and in the fight game that means making the fights people want to see. A purist may not like it but that's just how things are.

If you want to run a promotion like a true sport, the reality is you're greatly limiting how far you can grow and you'll either end up a minor company or out of business. Bellator want to be more sportslike and have fighters earn their title shots by going through tournaments, which is their right, but as history is showing and will continue to show, injuries can put the big title fights at risk and fighters being unwilling to enter the tournaments can prevent them from happening altogether.

And over the long-haul, that's just not good business.

yea good points maybe bellator should put some space in between the tourament and the title shot.

I guess I still like the guy earning a championship match.

    Re: The Bellator Thread

I don't think putting space between the tournament and the title shot would affect things. You'd still be asking guys to fight three times to get to a title fight and anything can happen, upsets, serious injuries, in those tournament fights, and most top fighters aren't going to risk a tournament just to get a title fight.

Speaking of which, Eddie Alvarez's contract expires in the fall or after his next fight, and Bjorn Rebney won't budge on the tournament issue. When it comes time for a top Bellator fighter to choose between staying in Bellator or going to the UFC, the insistence that fighters go through the tournament to get a title fight is only going to work against them. Unless a guy has the pure sports mindset or otherwise believes that going through a tournament is the best and only way to go to get a title fight, it's going to make it easier to make the jump to the UFC. You still have to earn a title fight in the UFC, and with few exceptions you generally have to rack up some wins to get one, but you also won't be forced to go through a tournament and fight in three consecutive months.
