Dana White had to call his brother every day when he was training to fight GSP to make sure that BJ was training and wasn't down at the beach surfing.
You just never which BJ is going to show up. The machine who is unstoppable, or the guy how gasses out after 3 rounds.
Exactly. Its not that Penn is inconsistent in terms of skill or really even performance. He's inconsistent in terms of motivation and cardio. An unmotivation Penn is still dangerous, but if you take him later into the fight, he won't have much left.

With the exception of the second Matt Hughes fight (which he lost because, according to his camp, he suffered a broken rib), I have yet to see BJ lose a fight that he should have won. Think about it... his other losses (again, I'm ignoring the first Pulver fight) were against Lyoto Machida and GSP, aka the current UFC Light Heavyweight and Welterweight Champions. Those two guys are just bigger, better fighters than BJ. But the fact remains... there's not a Lightweight in this World who has shown the ability to defeat him. Not one.
So, yes... BJ being Lightweight Champion does play a big part in the UFC having the best Championship line-up not only in the World, but that they have ever had. The only way it could be better is if Fedor was Heavyweight Champion.

I have to agree. BJ is very consistent at lightweight, where he is the man. I would say that Brock is in more danger than BJ since he is still relatively untested against huge dudes his size (I'm looking at Shane Carwin).
Also I love Lyoto, but I really want to see Shogun come out Grand Prix style.
And Dak, don't buy into the story editing of UFC prime-time. I love Dana White, but he knows how to promote a fight creatively. Actually remove that "but" that is one of the biggest reasons I dig him.

Umm... Shinya Aoki has shown the ability and even Diego Sanchez could give Penn a lot of problems. Penn is the best lightweight in the world but there are definitely fighters outside of the UFC who have shown the ability to challenge him.

Machida successfully defending the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship with his face.

I love Aoki... but I think Penn would take Aoki apart standing. It would be a brilliant fight if it went to ground, but just like Aoki kept things standing against Ribiero because he had the clear advantage, Penn would do the same. Penn isn't so easy to take to ground, either. Aoki doesn't have the greatest chin, which would be tested against Penn, I think.

Aoki can't stand with BJ Penn, and doesn't have the Size to take Penn down IMO.
Hellboy,Eddie Alvarez and Kawajiri present the biggest challenge out side of the UFC in my opinion. I wish some one them would start working there way in to the UFC but meh, Hellboy will never work with Dana v,v
