A week of misfortune turned to disaster for Affliction Entertainment on Friday, as the promotion canceled Affliction “Trilogy,” which had been scheduled for Aug. 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
SI.com reported the news Friday morning, and Sherdog.com has confirmed that Affliction is notifying fighters' camps.
The cancellation -- which could spell the end of Affliction's year-long run as a mixed martial arts promotion -- comes on the heels of heavyweight Josh Barnett's failed drug test, which forced him out of the “Trilogy” main event against Fedor Emelianenko on Wednesday. Barnett, 32, tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid and was denied licensure by the California State Athletic Commission.
Promoters scrambled to find a replacement opponent for Emelianenko and reportedly considered middleweight Vitor Belfort, light heavyweight prospect Muhammed Lawal and heavyweights Brett Rogers, Paul Buentello, Jeff Monson and Bobby Lashley.

I know we have a thread with the Fedor/Barnett news, but I thought this deserved its own thread...as it's pretty big news. I was REALLY looking forward to this. Barnett is now to Affliction what Shamrock was to EliteXC.

If they do fold after this, now would be a great time for UFC to pick up some talented people. Same with Strikeforce. Dana has been saying he really wants Fedor, so now is probably the best chance he will get. Fedor has one fight left on his contract, which they will most likely sell. The ball is in UFC's court to do something.

Well, apparently Showtime had a lot to do with the cancellation too.

Details on the cancellation are few, but the loss of Josh Barnett, one half of the evening’s main event, undoubtedly contributed to the decision.
A source close to the situation also informed MMAWeekly.com that Affliction’s pay-per-view provider, Showtime, played a major factor in the cancellation.

Game over for Affliction most likely, good job Barnett. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Machida successfully defending the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship with his face.
If its partly the PPV carrier, they might have been told that they have to get another major name to face Fedor, which is tough on short notice. Or Showtime may have simply said no, without the main event they were supposed to have that they just won't do it...?

Apparently Dana is going to be making an announcement on ESPN radio 6pm Pacific time. It might have to do with this whole thing, or something completely different.
*Crosses fingers*
