In an interview with Portal das Lutas, up-and-coming Junior dos Santos shed some light on why he was recently pulled from a scheduled UFC 102 matchup with Justin McCully. And the news he delivered may have some far-reaching implications in the not-so-distant future for the Heavyweight division.
“They took me off the August 29 show. My opponent’s changed. I’ll probably face Cro Cop,” says Junior dos Santos. “If I beat him I’ll be in really good standing. If that’s truly the case, I’m guaranteed on the main card and in the main event of the evening. If I were to fight now it wouldn’t be on the main card…. To me it’s incredible. When they asked me if they could change the fight date I was a bit bothered, because I wanted to fight right away. I’ve been away for some time now. But the Fertitta brothers asked me and I accepted. After that I found out it would be against Cro Cop and was overjoyed. It’ll be a big opportunity in my career. Lots of good things have happened in my life and this is one more. I’m going to make the most of it.”
Based on that quote, speculation that UFC Kingpin Lorenzo Fertitta flew out on a private het to Zagreb to negotiate an offer-that-he-couldn’t-refuse with Mirko CroCop may indeed be true.
The winner of a potential fight between these two heavyweights would indeed be seen as a top contender in the heavyweight division. For Junior dos Santos, it would mean a quick path to the top. The Brazilian prospect burst onto the scene just recently in October, scoring an 81-second knockout over then-top contender and fellow Brazilian Fabricio Werdum at UFC 90. He followed that win up with an even quicker 54-second knockout win over Stefan Struve at UC 95. A win over the Croatian would put the Team Noguiera-trained big man in the same league as fellow prospects Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez, who are slated to fight each other at the following UFC 104 event.
Should be a brawl, Two very powerful strikers going toe-to-toe ... True test to see if Cro Cop really is back!

People have been busting a nut over Cain Velasquez and Shane Carwin in recent weeks, and rightfully so I might add, but Junior dos Santos is the real young Heavyweight I think people need to start looking at as the future of the division. And this fight against Cro Cop is the perfect place to start to show people that he's the real deal. Can't wait for this.

Cro Cop isn't the place to show your skill anymore.
He was doing very well against Turk no doubt but that eye poke really helped as well. I'm not saying he would have lost but that eye poke helped him win that fight for sure.

We'll never know, I'm just saying I see Dos Santos as the favorite here, he's a talented young kickboxer who is the protege of Big Nog and Anderson Silva...dude has some good trainers and already pretty good standup and finishing power.

LAS VEGAS – UFC president Dana White Thursday told reporters that Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic may in fact honor the UFC deal presented him prior to his Octagon return at UFC 99.
On Tuesday, a report surfaced quoting heavyweight Junior Dos Santos saying he would be fight the Croatian MMA star at UFC 103 on Sept. 19 in Dallas. Dos Santos last week had been removed from his scheduled appearance at UFC 102 claiming injury.
White blasted Cro Cop following his UFC 99 victory over Mustapha Al-Turk when Cro Cop said he had signed a three-fight deal with Dream.
"I hope so," White said when asked whether Cro Cop was returning to the UFC fold. "Like I said at that press conference in Germany, he and I had a deal; I think he's going to honor the deal."
According to Croatian website Index.hr, UFC executive Lorenzo Fertitta last week flew to Cro Cop's hometown of Zagreb to negotiate his return and make him "an offer he couldn't refuse." The two reportedly emerged "all smiles" from the meeting.
White pointed blame for the snafu in the direction of Japanese promoters.
"I've said this many times, and I'll say it again: there's some crooked (expletive) that goes on in Japan," he said. "They're all crooked; there's some sneaky (expletive) going on over there. That's always a big problem. These guys that are in the fight business over there, for my Mexican friends, 'no bueno.'"
However, White declined to call the fight a done deal.
Dana White hates japs now? O.o
