Three fights is too many. Two at the most. But unlike (seemingly) everyone else, I think this is actually workable. People are looking at it as being structured as a UFC PPV, which it wouldn't be. You have an opening fight and a headline fight, scheduled for the first and last 15-20 minutes of the show. The middle 20-30 minutes being used as a way to promote and hype the upcoming PPV. UFC is currently promoting
at least one major event a month. With a weekly show you could have Rogan interviewing the main event guys, and even the undercarders (stealing a wrestling term here) to get them over with the public. I've been watching UFC for coming up on four years and I still struggle with who fighters are at times. This would solve that problem immediately.
The shows themselves could be used as joint UFC/WEC ventures giving you two stacked rosters of fighters to use, plus the wealth of unsuccessful TUF allumi that can be contacted for fights. UFC are also forever searching for new guys to use on PPV and this could act as a try-out for guys who they want to check out. Also, if a guy fights on the weekly show then he is out for as long as the athletic commision deem necessary, that's a given. Fighters fighting while unhealthy is not what any of us want. However a weekly UFC show doesn't even have to feature any fights when you have a really big PPV (like 100) coming up as they could dedicate the entire show to promoting the fights and the card and even have opponents interviewed at the same time by Rogan (just imagine Rogan sat in between Rampage and Rashad for a 10-15 minute interview).
A weekly show would also mean longer breaks would be able to be had between TUF seasons, cos we're basically getting two to three seasons a year, and that's sapping the crop of young talent out there. Reduced to one season a year, the sixteen guys in the house would be guarenteed to be the best of those not already in UFC for that year, making the shows fights much more exciting, not simply relying on the coaches, or patriotism to sell the show. You could even hold the TUF quaifiers on the weekly show by having (as Sawyer suggested) three to four fights in one night and back to back, two hour specials, getting everyone pumped about the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.
While I do, of course, see the downside to a weekly show, the upside is much greater, and it's easy as hell to avoid every obstacle thrown up by everyone in this thread so far... Except maybe the over-exposure one, although I think reducing the seasons of TUF to one a year would help with that.
And that's my 3,000th post boys and girls... I'm happy with that.
