Hahaha.. Ray Mercer is 48-years old and hasn't beaten a legitmate heavyweight in years. There is no defending this. Sylvia had a bit of a luck streak (Arlovski is known for his weak chin) but that's about it. what legacy?
And I have to laugh because just a couple weeks ago people on this site were saying Sylvia is better than Barnett and was a legitimate opponent for Fedor. Bullshit.
Who's defending it? I'm trying to gauge how damaging it is to Sylvia. Bit of a difference there.
And Sylvia's legacy is that of a 2-time UFC HW champion who was widely considered a top ten HW through much of his career. Let's not getting into revising history here - he is a guy who was one of the top two heavyweights in the UFC for a 5-year period from 2002 through 2007. His last fight in the UFC was for the HW belt. I dislike him as a fighter and find him often boring, but that doesn't change what he was.

Actually his last fight in the UFC was against Brandon Vera. 'And yeah... he may have been a 2 time UFC Heavyweight champion, but how many top ten heavyweights besides AA has he beat? Even in his prime he was meh.

Machida successfully defending the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship with his face.

He fought Brandon Vera at UFC 77 on 10/21/2007. He fought Antonio Nogueira at UFC 81 for the interim HW belt that Frank Mir now holds on 02/02/2008.
Wins over top names in the division other than AA is pretty much what defined his career as a pretty good fighter (at least in terms of results) rather than an elite one. Ricco Rodriguez was top ten when Sylvia beat him. Vera wasn't at the time, but he was looked as the "next big thing" at HW (much like Velasquez and Carwin are now) so it was a pretty big deal that Sylvia won.
Sylvia's only losses have come against top competition. But he doesn't a lot of wins over top competition. Really just the two wins over AA and the one over RR. His career has not been that much different than Rich Franklin's, to be honest, but Franklin gets more credit because he's not as universally disliked as Sylvia is. And he's not a boring, safe fighter like Sylvia usually is.

Tried that. It ends up with the video not showing up for me.
Just fixed it for you.
As far as this fight goes, it shows that Sylvia maybe doesnt have it anymore. Not that he was so great when he was in his prime, but he is still a former UFC World Champion and can't judge his all career based on this fight. Also I still believe that if this fight had taken place 2 years ago, he would have won. A boxer, by right, should have no chance against a skilled MMA fighter.
The truth is, people often judge a fighter's entire career, based on performances they have while out of their prime. Look at Wanderley Silva...look at Cro Cop...look at Ken Shamrock...
Affliction III might be Tim Sylvia's final shot.

Do you have a reason not to give The Half Boy your vote for the Hall of Fame?
Maybe some people.. but I brought up that he was a champion in UFC and I also brought up how he made his name on AA and how the UFC heavyweight division was weak when Sylvia was champion.
We want to talk about revisionist history.. lets start there. Saying Tim Sylvia is a former heavyweight champion holds as much weight as saying John Ruiz was a heavyweight champion in boxing or Corrie Sanders was a heavyweight champion in boxing. It may technically be true.. but does it make them great?
Champions aren't solely judged on their titles or records.. they are also judged on their peers and how well they performed against quality opponents.
If Brock Lesnar defeats Frank Mir, he will already have more quality wins than that of Sylvia. That speaks volumes on where the division was..

Dont get me wrong, I've never been a fan of Sylvia and I actually used to get pissed when people use to rate him so high. Even Sherdog used to rate him high and the funny thing is, when he was fighting for the UFC, people used to complain that he wasn't rated higher than he should've.
As far as beating top contenders, except for AA and Brandon Vera, in the last 3 years he hasnt beaten anyone worth mentioning, that's true. But against Nogueria he fought a great fight and almost came out with the win. Against Randy Couture he was dominated, but he did last 5 rounds and was supposedly injured as well.
Again dont get me wrong, he did get way more credit than he should've gotten back in the days, but he's also getting criticised more than he should right now as well.
