Satoshi Ishii, a Japanese gold medalist at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games' Judo competition, has signed with the Japanese-based World Victory Road to compete in its Sengoku event series, the organization today announced.
Ishii, 22, is one of MMA's most promising heavyweight prospects.
In fact, Ishii had been in talks with the UFC but ultimately decided to sign with an organization closer to home.
Ishii is expected to debut for the organization by year's end.
Soon after winning his Olympic medal, Ishii announced his intentions of competing in mixed martial arts. UFC President Dana White hinted at UFC 94 that he had already signed the fighter to a contract and was going to ease him into competition.
However, even White seemed to think Ishii would eventually end up in Japan, where he likely can command big dollars and heavy promotion as soon as he makes his pro debut.
Ishii, who's expected to compete at approximately 240 pounds, called out Fedor Emelianenko soon after winning his medal, and he's also talked about his desire to fight Josh Barnett.
Sengoku officials have not officially announced a debut date or opponent for the rookie fighter.
Never actually seen this guy but by the seems of it, the UFC missed out pretty big here, especially with him being a HW fighter.

Yeah, this is really disappointing for the UFC's heavyweight division but meh, I'll still watch him fight in Japan. So much for him being on the Ultimate Fighter though.
