MMA Bay are reporting that the French striker Cheick Kongo will step in on late notice to face Cain Velasquez at UFC 99 in Germany.
Kongo (14-4-1) will be a decent replacement for the injured Heath Herring as the UFC invade mainland Europe for the first time, although the bout is just over three weeks away. Kongo was apparently approached about the fight while he was in France yesterday and spoke to his coaches at the Wolfslair regarding the possibly fight. After conferring with his management, they agreed to take the fight on June 13th.
Kongo's recent win streak has led to talk of a title shot and the Parisian has mentioned his desire to fight for the strap. A win against the rising star Velasquez would catapult him into the elite of the division and a possible title shot later in the year.
AKA's Velasquez remains undefeated (5-0) and has despatched of all of his opponents in convincing fashion, having never gone to a decision.

I actually like this fight more than Herring/Cain.

Well Herring is just a showman. The best thing about him is his hair, overcoat and cowboy hat.
Herrings a good fighter to, I'd rather see Herring in there against Cain then Kongo. If Kongo by some act of god is able to not be TKO'd, hes just going to get laid on for 3 rounds, he has 0 ground game.

Alright. So Deuce and I have decided to make a bet on the Kongo Vs. Velasquez bout. I believe Velasquez will defeat Kongo decisively. However, Deuce believes Kongo will emerge victorious. The bet is that if Velasquez wins, Deuce must change his name to whatever I choose for one week. Deuce has decided that if Kongo defeats Velasquez, I must start posting regularly on WC. Not just in the MMA section.
The only stipulation is that neither Kongo or Velasquez can attack the groin area more than once. And no, I'm not joking about that one. <.<

Agreed.
Herring seems to be the guy UFC trot out to get pounded by an up and comer these days. He's a journey man, and there's no doubt that he's talented, but I've seen him fight four or five times now, and if I remember correctly he's lost all but one of those fights. Sticking Kongo in instead is a win/win situation for them. If Cain wins he stays undefeated and looks impressive against another force hunting for Title contention, if Kongo wins then he breaks a winning streak and is made to look even more challenging for the top Heavyweights.
No matter who wins the UFC, and the fans, win big.

Well you see... Herring has this Achilles heel called wrestling... and losing to Nog... well yeah.
I like this fight better than Herring vs. Cain and the stand up should be interesting, if Kongo can stay on his feet that is.
