Anderson Silva will meet Forrest Griffin in a light heavyweight co-main event at UFC 101 on Aug. 8 at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.
MMABay.com was the first Web site to report the matchup Tuesday. UFC President Dana White confirmed the bout with Yahoo Sports shortly after.
Touted as the sport’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter after a string of knockout victories inside the Octagon, Silva handily earned a five-round unanimous decision over Thales Leites at UFC 97 on April 18 in Montreal. However, the Brazilian’s performance against his out-gunned opponent polarized fans and media. Silva’s controlled strategy was also questioned in his October 2008 victory over Patrick Cote at UFC 90.
With his UFC 97 victory, Silva, 33, now holds the record for consecutive wins (nine) inside the Octagon. His bout with Griffin will be his second at 205 pounds. Silva starched light heavyweight James Irvin with punches in just over a minute at UFC Fight Night 14 in July 2008.
The winner of season one of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter,” Griffin (16-5) became the UFC light heavyweight champion at UFC 86 in July 2008, where he took a hard-earned unanimous decision over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Griffin lost the title to Rashad Evans via a third-round technical knockout at UFC 92 last December.

Forrest will get killed, but it should be a very very entertaining fight. We know Forrest won't fall to his back, he will go at it with Silva. Who knows, if Forrest does win, it will surely be the revival of his career.

Interesting fight. Figured the UFC would line up someone for Silva who they knew would force him to engage. This one shouldn't be boring.
Its smart match-making, as far as potential outcomes go. If Silva loses, well, he was fighting one of the best at a higher weight class so its excusable. If Forrest loses, well, he was fighting the "best pound-for-pound in the world", so its excusable. It would be two losses in a row for Griffin, regardless of opponent. That's not a good thing.

I think it would be excusable to lose to the now UFC LHW Champ and then the MW Champ. In normal circumstances it would be bad... but come on.
I know that Forrest Griffin (home-grown UFC star) is not the same as Wanderlei Silva (imported UFC star)... but Silva's fight against Jardine was hyped as must-win as Silva lost three in a row. Despite that fact that those three were Mirko Crocop, Dan Henderson, and Chuck Liddell - three of the best in the world at the given time of each win. From what I've read, it wasn't just hype - the UFC was ready to get rid of him if he lost.
So while I do agree that losing two in a row would be understandable for Griffin in this situation, given his opponents, I think you also have to consider that the UFC has created a fan culture where losing streaks are not supposed to be tolerated. If Griffin does lose to Silva, does that not make his fight after that "must win"? What about if he suffered another loss? Or is he above having that kind of "must win" pressure because he's one of the golden boy's?

Don't get me wrong it's a big fight but Randy Couture is one of the best strategist in the game and Anderson Silva is a counter striker, Forrest is not going to engage with Silva this isn't the Forrest of past when he would swing and duck his head this is a smarter Forrest he'll stay to the outside throw leg kicks and try to take Silva down, it's not going to be entertaining.
I hope I'm wrong but that's how I see it.

I don't see it going down that way. Everyone(including Griffin) knows the pressure he is under to press Silva's buttons in this fight. I think if he wants to stay out of a potential doghouse, he'll put on a show.

Its possible. My guess is that Griffin knows that Dana White wants someone who will go in there and force Silva to engage, and that's what he's going to try. Whether White actually outrightly asked Griffin that or just made it clear, but as this fight could make or break Silva as a bankable star in the UFC, I doubt the White is leaving it to chance...
...thought I must admit the possibility of Silva staying away and pointing his way to another win would probably make Dana White's head explode, and that would be amusing...

There's no way Griffin would listen to Dana if he said that and there's no way Dana would say that it's the main reason why EliteXC got into so much trouble after the Kimbo-TUF 2 n00b fight.
Like I said I hope I'm wrong but I see it being a point fight.
