Fabricio Werdum — widely regarded as a top 10 heavyweight mixed martial artist — is now an official Strikeforce employee.
And while rumors have swirled that “Vai Cavalo” will challenge Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem at the promotion’s next offering, “Lawler vs. Shields” at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., on June 6, company CEO Scott Coker says not so fast.
Here’s a snip:
“Yeah, but that’s not a fight [Overeem vs. Werdum] necessarily we feel we’d have to do first … there are some other free agents out there, and guys fighting with other companies who aren’t exclusive. So we’ll explore those options before we make the announcement of who [Overeem is] fighting.”
Werdum was recently dropped from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) when the parties were unable to come to terms on a new contract after his surprising 81-second knockout loss to Octagon newcomer Junior Dos Santos at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” on October 15.
The Brazilian left the promotion with an even record (2-2), scoring big wins over Brandon Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga and perhaps bigger losses to Andrei Arlovski and “Cigano.” Werdum remains a very capable and dangerous fighter who could very well give Overeem all he can handle, but it may happen later rather than sooner.
Overeem recently lost a close decision to World GP 2008 Champion Remy Bonjasky in the K-1 event just last month. Prior to the setback, “Demolition Man” had won five straight consecutive bouts, including a first round destruction of former K-1 heavyweight champion Badr Hari at the Fields Dynamite!! super show on Dec. 31.
Now that he has made it clear the he intends to return to the United States in two months to defend his belt, it appears that the hunt for a noteworthy and deserving opponent is already under way.
Well maybe he can get back on track and then UFC may consider having him back, he was a big disappointment in the UFC and I'm sure it's not just me who feels that way.

Re: Fabricio Werdum signs with Strikeforce but fight against Alistair Overeem questio
Yeah but you really can't doubt Werdum's BJJ and call it whatever you like, Overeem has a habbit of losing to Brazilians. Out of 8 fights with Brazilian fighters, Overeem has only won 2, which were both at the hands of Belfort.

I agree Werdrum has amazing jitz, but to use it that fight has to get to the ground. And Alistair is a lot better fighter now than he was 2-3 years ago when he was losing to Big Nog, Rua and Arona (who at the time were considered near the top in their divisions).
I just think Overeem is so much better now as an overall mma fighter that he's going to knock Werdrum out.

It was two or three years ago but that fact has to play on his mind that he lost to those 3 one after another and I think he will be a little too cautious. That's when Werdum will likely catch him.

Overeem is scary as a striker at this point. The man is a monster physically. He went from a guy who seemed a bit slender for Light Heavyweight to an outright monster. KOing one of the best kickboxers in the world and going to a decision with another shows how far along his striking skills are at this point.
I like Werdrum, but Overeem is one of the most improved HWs out there over the past few years.

Well like it says, Werdum will very likely have a tune up fight before a title fight with Alistair and that's when we'll see if Werdum will have any chance at all, because if we continue to see UFC Werdum then the end result is clearly ineviteble.
