Date Time: Apr-18-2009 7pm PT/10pm ET Event Type: Setanta - Fight Card Location: Centre Bell, Canada
Description: UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva returns to the Octagon on Saturday, April 18th to defend his crown against number one contender Thales Leites in the main event of UFC 97. The pound for pound king has already defended his title more times than anyone in UFC middleweight history and will battle Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Leites - winner of five in a row.
Also featured in the UFC's return to Canada is the light heavyweight showdown fans have waited for years to see, as UFC legend Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell squares off against Brazilian superstar Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in what promises to be one of the most explosive bouts of 2009.
MAIN CARD (televised)
Middleweight champ Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leites
Chuck Liddell vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Brian Stann
Cheick Kongo vs. Antoni Hardonk
Luis Cane vs. Steve Cantwell
PRELIMINARY CARD (un-televised)
Vinicius Magalhaes vs. Eliot Marshall
Xavier Foupa-Pokam vs. Denis Kang
Jason MacDonald vs. Nate Quarry
Ed Herman vs. David Loiseau
David Bielkheden vs. Mark Bocek
Ryo Chonan vs. T.J. Grant
Sam Stout vs. Matt Wiman
I really don't see how or why Soszynski/Stann and Cane/Cantwell beat out some of the fights on the prelim card.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I see Thales Leites beating Silva. Leites isn't a very high profile fighter. Silva does well against people with pretty big names, but if you look back on Silva's losses, you will see he has slipped up to less notable talent. Granted Silva has gotten better since those losses, but no matter how good you are, underestimation beats skill.

Outside the main two fights, its a pretty weak card. I really like Soszynski and did before TUF, but what has he done to be in that position on a PPV? Same with Stann - promising fighter who has not beat anyone of note. Kongo is usually fun, but he's against a very mediocre fighter in Hardonk.
I think the UFC knew they could sell out in Montreal without having to offer a strong card. I'm guessing the fans there are crazy regardless.

I have to watch this because of Anderson but honestly, I think the top two fights are pretty predictable. Anderson dominates, its just what he does, and more than likely Shogun beats Chuck. Shogun may have a problem with Chuck's take down defense, but its seem like these younger fighters are just to advanced for Chuck's style.

WTF is with Silva coming in underweight? He's always been a big middleweight. I've heard he walks around at something like 215-220 pounds. How the fuck do you over-cut by 3 pounds? Was he sick or something coming in? I smelling upset...
I have no idea what to expect out of the Rua-Liddell fight. Beyond entertainment, anyway. It could go massively either way and I wouldn't be shocked. Could see Liddell get leg-kicked and countered to death. Could see the prototypical Liddell counter-punch knockout. Just don't know.
