Miguel Torres was recently interviewed by Versus.com, where he discussed his future in the 135lb division.
"The future is bright for 135. I want to fight here for another two or three years, and once I have solidified myself at 135, I plan on moving up in weight. I can't fight forever. I can dominate 135 for the rest of my career and be comfortable, or I can test myself and be out of my comfort zone and try to make more money. I think fighting at a higher weight class, there will be bigger purses, bigger paydays and more high-profile fights. So, I am looking to do that in the future. But if I were to go to 155 and get a three-fight deal (in the UFC), I am sure I could get a huge increase in pay. And then (I can) always come down to 135 or 145."
I would absolutley love Torres to move up, the kid has skills, I mean at 135 he is undefeated in 15 and has only lost 1 in 35. A move up wouldn't hurt at all.

Torres is amazing. But he'll get killed at 155. That's not just one weight class, but two. Unless he could significantly increase his body mass, he would be a pretty small 155er, at least by UFC standards. Which means while he might be able to take on the avereage guys at that weight class, he's not going to match up against the best 155ers.

Well I really don't see anything left for him at 135 at least, I suppose he could move up to FW but I think he just wants to jump from WEC to UFC, bigger names, bigger money and bigger fights.

I don't think his small stature will be that much of a problem for him, he's got sick jitz absolutely sick so even though 155 has great wrestlers if he gets put on his back he's not in that much trouble and standing...well he's a very very dangerous striker who will probably be one of the faster guys at 155.

I understand why he wants to move up. Especially given he wants to go to 155, not just one weight class up to 145. Moving up just isn't always a great idea.
The problem I have is that Torres is not a particularly big guy. I'm sure he cuts to make 135, but my guess is that he walks around at about 150-155 at most. I'd say probably a bit less even. Now, if he moves up, he might be to add some muscle mass, so he would "normally" weight about 165, so he would have to cut down a bit to make 155. If he was to fight in the UFC at 155, he would be fighting a lot of guys who walk around at 170 or more. Which means he would be on the smaller end of the 155 division. That puts him at an immediate disadvantage.
His skillset is going to make him dangerous, no doubt. But when he comes against other top 155 guys, who also have elite skills, that size difference is going to become a significant disadvantage. Not to mention that trying to bulk up through the upper body could affect his handspeed in a negitive manner.
As I said, I understand the motivation. But what is so wrong with dominating a weight class for awhile? There are some good 135ers out there, though many are in Japan.

Well he is always going to come up against guys that will test him, but isn't that generally the main idea? He isn't getting tested at 135. His skills would take to at least near the top which although nothing is a given in MMA we can pretty much guarentee by how good Torres is. Does he have what it takes to take the title? Only time will tell if he makes the move, it will be a very exciting prospect.

He should move up to 45 first and test the waters there. Torres/Faber, Torres/Garcia, and Torres/Brown would pull huge numbers, though the last one less than the first two. If he gets dominated at 45, where a lot of the guys walk around at 160 or so and cut to the weight, then stay at 35 and destroy guys.
The move to 55 right away would be too much even for somebody of his immense talent to handle. That would be like asking St. Pierre to move up to 205 to face Chucky boy. Granted St. Pierre probably walks around near 200 pounds pre and post cut, but the size disparity between somebody like him and somebody like Chuck at fight time would be similar to what Torres would be facing at LW.
