Is Dana White Good for MMA?

Simple question, is he good for MMA?

I think he is. He has rejuvenated the sport and has created interest for it with the general public. He is arguably a marketing genius. Some say that he is bad because he doesn't use the universal titles and doesn't allow "his" fighters to fight in other promotions, although I don't think it's a bad thing, it's a good thing for the UFC. His contracts are another thing to consider, whether it's under-paying fighters or not being flexible with fighters. One person I was talking to said he will be the death of the sport...would you agree with that statement?

Re: Is Dana White Good for MMA?

I don't think Dana White is good for MMA.

He is the reason we aren't going to see Fedor/Couture. His contracts are unreasonable, he in effect holds fighters hostage by not letting them fight until they sign a new contract etc...

He is good for the UFC, not MMA though.

Re: Is Dana White Good for MMA?

I agree that he's very good for the UFC. What he's done for the promotion is impressive. However, as it often the case, what is good for one promotion is not necessarily good for the sport as a whole. Many things - whether its trying to undercut the competition, slag on fights not under contract, or using questionable means to keep negotiating leverage - are not really that good for the sport of mixed martial arts. The UFC is a business first, and its good business. You can't argue that.

Re: Is Dana White Good for MMA?

he made UFC the compagny it is today. i don't know much about the contract the fighters have. some people say he's unreasonable because he don't let his fighters fight in other promotions. well, to me this makes perfect sense. it's like Christiano Ronaldo is going to play a few matches for liverpool or chelsea. you don't want to get a fighter get injured or risk to lose his value because of another promotion. yeah sure, because of that you don't see certain matches... but i don't see this as Dana his fault. and you don't want to let another promotion make money with you're own fighters.

With Fedor though, he wouldn't agree to let Fedor agree in Sambo competitions which is like the national sport in Russia. That made it impossible for Fedor to sign. When Dana was trying to get Fedor he said that Fedor was probably the best HW in the world. After Fedor turned him down, Dana had the balls to say that Fedor wasn't even one of the top 10 HW's in the world. >_<

Crap like that is why people don't like Dana White.

Who cares? He's being a savy businessman you don't go around telling the "casual" fan that they failed to sign the #1 heavyweight in the world you try to devalue him as much as possible so people stay tuned in to your product.

Exactly why Dana White does as much harm as good for the sport of mixed martial arts as a whole. Yes, he's done awesome for the UFC. But doing right for the UFC isn't always the same as doing right for the sport. Sometimes it is, and the sport woudn't have the level of popularity that it does right nwo without the UFC. But since the UFC is a business and goal is to make money, so Dana White puts the business interests of the UFC first. That's the nature of being a promoter.

"Good for the sport" would be wanting every fan to know about one of the best fighters in the world, despite the fact that he doesn't fight for your promotion. Instead, White takes the business approach and attempts to devalue the name of that fighter. Hence, its good business, but bad for the sport as a whole.

And in the process you are losing real fans who think it is bullshit.

Who can the UFC rely on to regulalry buy the PPV's? Casual fans or true fans of the sport?
