Re: Jim Reviews CHIKARA

Late to reply, but Claudio/King was fun. Claudio really doesn't have the mat game to do the "Im going to outwrestle you" stuff like he was trying, but I got a rise out of the "He pulled my hair!" part. King looked kinda gassed after just five minutes which was weird, but damn Claudio looked RIPPED. He needs to stop the high-flying stuff though.

Any chance of the two luchador matches pretty pleeeeeeeeease? If its not much trouble of course.

Re: Jim Reviews CHIKARA

Man Makes Plans, And God Laughs
September 12, 2009

Brendan Michael Thomas vs Frightmare
This is a rematch from the first match of the Young Lions Cup VII which BMT surprisingly won. First time seeing BMT. Seems to be capable of getting decent heat. Wrestling wise, he wasn't that entertaining. Frightmare spends most of the time selling. Frightmare finally comes back and hits his standing shooting star press with the knees to pick up the victory. Really random ending that came out of nowhere and left me feeling flat. I enjoy seeing some Frightmare, but I could go awhile without seeing any more BMT for the time being. 3 Minutes. 1 1/2 Stars.

The Colony vs The Badd Boys
The night before the Colony's title shot, Fire Ant and today's partner, Green Ant gets a taste of the debuting Badd Boys. Like every match I've seen of Green Ant, he plays the face-in-peril for most of the match. I have redubbed him "Morton Ant". The Badd Boys have a Road Warriors like gimmick of just being power wrestlers. It seems as if Louden can't remember which Badd brother is which, so he keeps calling both Chad Badd.

The Badd Boys are pretty sloppy, sometimes even falling down after a move. Fire Ant gets in a hot lucha tag, but that doesn't last long as he's tossed outside of the ring. The Badd Boys finishes Green Ant off to get their first CHIKARA win and one point. It was decent, but the Badd Boys were literally bad. I'm entertained by their personalities, but unless they improve in the ring, I'm not going to look forward to their matches. 6 Minutes. 2 Stars.

Grizzly Redwood vs Steve "The Turtle" Weiner
First time seeing Turtle. I take it he's a real case Eugene? I'm trying to think of a PC way to go about this, but please don't ever book Turtle again. Grizzly is DQ'd after little action due to a low kick. 2 minutes. 1/2 Star.

Colin Delaney vs Dasher Hatfield
Another rematch from night 1 of YLC. Colin picked up the win in that match. Dasher is still extremely over with the crowd. Despite there being a few sloppy spots, there was some good action. The first "Good" match of the night. Dasher wins with the Grand Slam (Middle rope power slam). I'm really enjoying Dasher. I really enjoyed Ultimo Breakfast, so I was disappointed when I learned it was only a temporary gimmick. However, the Dasher gimmick might be good enough to keep on Create-A-Wrestler. It'd be a sad day when he drops it. 11 Minutes. 2 1/2 Stars.

Delirious and Ultramantis Black vs Super Smash Bros
Interesting choice for a match up since both teams are going through some major angle advancement. I'm not a fan of Player Uno, but I enjoyed the role he had in the match. Uno would tag in or out at awkward times hinting at a possible heel turn. Hot finish at the end nearly gets SSB the win. UMB finishes Uno off with the Praying Mantis Bomb. Finally, UMB and the Order has been having a hell of a time getting wins this year. I believe this was just their third. Ironically, two of theirs was over SSB. The match took a backseat for the story of Uno and his jealousy over Dos which came off nice. Their match the next night has some more solid buildup. 10 Minutes. 2 1/2 Stars.

Tim Donst vs Hydra
Prior to the match, Donst cuts a heel promo that is just gold. Donst doesn't even wait for Hydra to get in the ring before he attacks him. I believe Hydra is bleeding from somewhere since Donst has a little amount of blood on his hand. Donst finally throws Hydra in the ring and gets the submission victory with a front chancery with the leg vise. The match was hardly a match, but I loved the angle. As much as I've been critical of Donst, I'm loving this heel turn and run by him. The rating is based on all events of the night and not just the actual match. 16 Seconds. 3 1/2 Stars.

Mike Quackenbush, Lince Dorado and Equinox vs Vin Gerard, STIGMA and ?
Due to the injury to Akuma, Chuck Taylor was taken out of the match, so it's hat lottery time. "Duke of Dorchester" Pete Doherty isn't in the house. Aww.

Daizee Haze is drawn and she is in the building, so it's a mixed tag match. Gerard's facial expression is perfect for how I feel about Daizee being in the match. Gerard and Equinox gets in some good fighting in the match continuing their feud that is over, but not totally. Haze spends most of the match coming in and slapping the guys and getting in a move or two before tagging out. After slapping all of the technios and kicking the middle rope to crotch Quack, Quack strikes back with a palm slap. While Quack is upset with himself for losing his temper, the fans love it. Equinox hits a missile dropkick to STIGMA, but injures his foot on the landing. With Jimmy in obvious pain, Gerard jumps in the ring and quickly locks in the STF to get the tap out win. Really fun match that is quite possibly the best usage of a female in a mixed persons match I've ever seen. Haze was surprisingly great. The ending hurts the match with how quick and sudden it ends. However, when there's a legit injury, there's only so much you can do. Had the match continued for a few more minutes, it may of been a CHIKARA MOTYC. 12 Minutes. 3 3/4 Stars.

Osirian Portal vs F.I.S.T.
Originally scheduled to be Icarus and Akuma challenging for the tag titles, the injury to Akuma led to Chuck Taylor taking his place. Since Taylor and Icarus has zero points, the titles are no longer on the line. This is Ophidian's first match since the broken arm. With F.I.S.T. having such crazy heat, the Portal are the faces of the match. Fairly slow start and I'm pretty bored. The crowd doesn't seem too into it either. Amasis spends a good portion of the match playing the face-in-peril while F.I.S.T. targets Ophidian's hurt arm every chance they get. Ophidian gets in a hot tag and takes over. Dives on the outside follows. The Portal looks to have the match won with the Osirian Sacrament. That goes awry as Ophidian is dropped arm first on the top rope and Amasis gets a pair of knees to his back. DVD in the corner gets F.I.S.T. a non-title victory. Despite boring me in the first half, it ended up being an exciting match surprising me greatly. I could see the logic in either team winning. The Portal so that they would look good for the next night and add some backstory for an eventual Portal vs Akuma/Icarus. However, the backstory would still be there for F.I.S.T. to win. Not to mention, you have more sympathy given to the Portal for their official face turn I suspect will happen soon. 15 Minutes. 3 3/4 Stars.

Claudio Castagnoli vs Hallowicked
This match has a lot of personal backstory for me. The first time I saw Hallowicked wrestle was on my ROH Glory By Honor VI Night 1 match against Claudio. Being impressed by him, I went searching for other Hallowicked matches. The first one I found and watched was Incoherence vs F.I.S.T. (Akuma and Icarus) from a CHIKARA event. That would be my first taste of CHIKARA. So now being a fan of CHIKARA, I've sort of come full circle seeing the rematch that originally got me to see CHIKARA. To my shock, the match is a mat classic for the first 15 minutes or so. Despite not looking the part, Hallowicked holds his own with the chain wrestling. The fans were quiet in the beginning, but they were reacting a lot near the end. In the final five minutes, the two finally starts throwing together some non holds. A double KO big boot spot follows. Hallowicked nearly gets the three with the Go To Sleepy Hollow. A ton of roll up attempts. Claudio finally gets the pinfall after folding Hallowicked up. This is going to be a match where some will be completely bored. Being the technical fan that I am, I loved it. More than that, I enjoyed it even more since it was nothing like what I expected. Maybe I'm overrating it some, but this might be a CHIKARA MOTYC. 21 Minutes. 4 Stars.

Overall
Clocking in at just over two hours, there's not much to see here. It ends up being a fairly weird show. Two of my least favorite CHIKARA wrestlers (Donst and Uno) ended up being two of my favorites tonight. A disappointing first hour was followed by a solid second. A main event I felt would of been disappointing ended up being one of my favorites. Despite originally scheduled to have a title match which would of made it important, losing it does the opposite. For the most part, it's a passable show especially with what happens the next night. However, if you do drop the twenty to get the DVD, there is enough to make the order worth it. Just be ready to skip through some bad.

Re: Jim Reviews CHIKARA

Hiding in Plain Sight
September 13, 2009

F.I.S.T. vs Incoherence
Akuma is still injured so it's Chuck Taylor and Icarus for F.I.S.T. Ironically, it was the old Incoherence that ended the Campeonatos de Parejas title reign of F.I.S.T. Despite the champions being Akuma and Icarus, Akuma was injured, so Taylor filled in. Your standard good match with these two teams. I'm not sure if Frightmare can count for rookie of the year for 2009 since he technically debuted in 2008, but he would be my choice. Amazing. Hallowicked gets the pin on Icarus following the Graveyard Smash (Sky High). Hallowicked really impressed me this weekend. He can be taken seriously as a solid wrestler. Incoherence now has 2 points while F.I.S.T. went from beating the champions to losing in the opening match. 3 Stars.

Sara Del Ray vs Ariel
Ugh. This may sound sexist, but most these women matches are just piss breaks. They're almost always the low points of the show. More than that, I just don't care about them. The sole exception this year in CHIKARA was Shark Girl. She at least had a gimmick where things were fun. The match went nearly 10 minutes, which is twice the amount of time it should have been given. Del Ray wins with the Royal Butterfly to put me out of my misery. 1 Star.

Champions Of Charity Award Presentation with Lobsterman
Chikarason is out in the ring with Hydra and Turtle, who's in a full turtle outfit which is 100x better than what he wore for his match the previous night. They honor Jeff "Lobersterman" Costa for his charitable work. Lobsterman gives a good speech that proves he's better than most young indy stars on the mic. 2.0 hits the ring and attacks Lobsterman so they can steal the award. During all of the chaos, Tim Donst attacks Hydra. 2.0 leaves and Chikarason suspends Donst for his actions tonight and the previous night. On paper, this sounded like a waste of time honoring Lobsterman, but it came off really well. Some more solid booking with the new heel Donst. Meanwhile, 2.0 are very entertaining on the stick.

UltraMantis Black and Delirious vs Eddie Kingston and Grizzly Redwood
The lesser used version of the Roughnecks. Has Kingston and Redwood ever teamed together in CHIKARA without it being a trios match? Kingston busts out some lucha libra or at least tries to which astonishes everyone. Numerous tags by the Order while Eddie refuses to tag in Grizzly. Redwood is starting to get frustrated at his partner. Eddie dives on to the outside to avoid actually tagging in Grizzly physically. Grizzly and Delirious have an enjoyable short segment together before Delirious nails the Mantis Driver. UMB holds Kingston's leg to allow Delirious to get the pin for the Order. The match was better than I imagined it would have been. Kingston was fantastic by putting so much effort to do something different. I dug the whole story of Eddie not even wanting to tag in Grizzly. As we near the anniversary of Mitch Franklin turning into Grizzly (November 21st I believe) I have to give him a lot of credit. He has improved so much. Easily my pick for most improved wrestler of the year. 3 Stars.

Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli vs Mike Quackenbush and Jigsaw
The Final Countdown tour rolls into CHIKARA. I believe Quack was still not 100% after his surgery and the commentators said that Jigsaw injured his knee at the DGUSA taping a few days before. So right there they put over how much these final Danielson matches means to everyone. Jigsaw's injury becomes the main story of the match as Team Uppercut keeps Quack out of the match as they punish Jigsaw's knee. They literally did everything they could think of to inflict more pain. As the match progresses, Claudio and Dragon turns almost into rudos by continuously knocking Quack off of the apron to keep him out of the match. With Jigsaw in a half Boston Crab by Danielson, Quack comes in and levels him with a palm thrust. In one of the most epic moments of the year, Danielson calmly lets Jigsaw go to escape under the bottom rope and stands up to Quack. Danielson is shaking out of anger. My only thought was "Oh shit". Quack and Dragon trade palm thrusts and European uppercuts. Both Claudio and Jigsaw interferes in the match with Jigsaw trying to do as much as possible with only one leg. Quack locks in the CHIKARA Special on Danielson, but Claudio gets in and European Uppercuts Quack to break up the hold. Airplane spin without any arms for the second night in a row. Jigsaw ducks down to send Claudio up over the top rope to the outside. Quack rolls through a sunset flip by Dragon until he can get Danielson in a roll up for the victory. Amazing match for CHIKARA. Most of their really good matches are fairly spotty, but this relied on storytelling. All of the work on Jigsaw's knee was done perfectly. I've never seen Jigsaw look as good as he did in this match. He honestly wrestled as if he was one of the best indy wrestling had to offer. I wasn't really sure what to give this ratings wise. It's unbelievable for CHIKARA standards, but I was not sure if the rating would have been the same had it been in ROH. I suppose I came to the conclusion that you can't compare the two as if they're the same. This match was so great partly because it was unlike what you'd typically see in CHIKARA. Add in how special it was because of Dragon's final CHIKARA match, I see no reason why this isn't a MOTYC. This is the best CHIKARA match I've seen this year. 4 1/2 Stars.

After the match, Danielson gets on the mic to thank the fans for being so into the match. He admits that in the past year or so, he hasn't been the best in the world. When someone shouts "Name anyone else", Dragon does just that. He cites The American Wolves, Claudio and a couple of others having better matches than him on certain nights. As he bids farewell, he lays out a challenge to every single indy wrestler - be the best in the world, every single night. Honestly, this was my favorite promo of the year. So passionate and humble. How many wrestlers would actually admit they weren't the best? I have to give Danielson a lot of credit for doing this match. He certainly didn't need to. Minus the three nights for King of Trios this year, he never even wrestled in CHIKARA. Yet, he still made sure to add CHIKARA to his Final Countdown tour.

2.0 and The UnStable vs Dasher Hatfield, Lince Dorado, Green Ant, Carpenter Ant and ?
Due to the injury to Jimmy Olsen the previous night, he's out. Name in a hat time~! Matt Classic, Scotty Goldman and Colt Cabunny are all picked, but none of them are there. The forth name is Colt Cabana. Cabana makes his CHIKARA return, wrestling for the first time since the debut show in 2002. The UnStable refuses to allow 2.0 in their huddle, so they try pulling Bryce Remsburg in. A ton of shenanigans as expected. Colt nails all of the rudo's with Dusty Rhodes' style elbows. With Colin Delaney upside down in the tree of woe, the match is turned into a baseball game. Dasher is on third and Colt is up to bat. STIGMA ends up being the catcher while Gerard is the pitcher. Gerard's reaction is priceless. Colt cracks the ball out far, to let his four partners score (AKA dropkick Delaney, who's still upside down for all of this). It comes down to Colt and STIGMA, who has the ball. Colt knocks STIGMA down, to get home. More chaos follows until Shane Matthews is in the ring alone. Lobsterman (Complete with a lobster claw) knocks him out with previously said claw. Dorado gets the pin for his team. This wasn't really a wrestling match. The actual wrestling part wasn't anything memorable and didn't take up much time. That being said, this might be the most fun "Match" of the year. The long baseball segment was hilarious. I have no idea how to grade this though. Not Rated.

Player Dos (c) vs Player Uno - Young Lion's Cup
A rematch from Young Lion's Cup Night 2. Even though his gear makes it hard to notice, it looks like Uno has dropped a lot of weight since last year. A lot of great action here. I'm not normally one to praise Uno, but this match delivered without either really messing up. Dos controls most of the match with Uno almost in the face roll except for showing aggression. Dos ends up putting Uno away with a top rope forward flipping...stunner? I don't know what was with Uno this weekend. He seemed motivated and wrestled like he actually had some talent. This was a much better match than their YLC match. Great way to begin Dos' cup reign while adding more story to the impending (?) breakup. 3 1/2 Stars.

The Osirian Portal (c) vs The Colony - Campeonatos de Parejas
This is a rematch from the first show of the year, Revelation X. On that night, the Portal retained their titles, however; that was only one fall. This match will be two. The match ended up being slopping in some places with Ophidian locking in a very loose Death Grips. The Colony upsets the champions getting the first fall following a TKO to Amasis. The second fall is where the match picked up. Ophidian's arm is targeted and he's forced to work with only one strong arm. The story of the fall is the Portal doing everything they could do try to even the falls, but the Colony keeps kicking out. Fire Ant nails the Beach Break, but Ophidian kicks out. Fire Ant doesn't waste any time and goes right into a cross arm breaker. Ophidian tries to hang in there so Fire Ant switches to a short arm scissors which finally forces Ophidian to tap out. The Colony are your new Campeonatos de Parejas! Sadly, I felt this match was a disappointment. It was too sloppy at points and didn't have the excitement that the previous match had. It did, however; have a better story with Ophidian's arm injury being used in the finish. The match was still more good than bad, but after being so impressed with the Revelation X, this just couldn't compare. As surprising as the Colony winning the belts are, I'm happy for them since they were two of the main guys who entertained me during my first CHIKARA show. The only problem is I'm not sure what they can really do with the Colony as the champs. I just can't see them being "Champion wrestlers". 3 Stars.

Overall
One of the better CHIKARA shows of the year. Minus the women's match, I really enjoyed everything on the show. Quacksaw vs Uppercut is a MOTYC, new champions and Uno delivering his second good night in a row makes this an easy recommendation.

Re: Jim Reviews CHIKARA

I see no reason why the tag wouldn't stick out in ROH, I've said it before and I stand by it that it tops anything ROH have put on this year and it's honestly a high MOTYC for sure. It stands out from any promotion this year for me. Granted, Danielson isn't a Chikara reg. but you still have it to give to Quack for getting that shit together whilest most of the indy scene continues to get stale. Everyone was epic in the tag.

Forget best Chikara match this year, it's probably the best Chikara match ever.
