ROH is financed by Cary Silken. Several years ago the decision was made to begin PPVs. The hope was it would grow the company, add fans, and revenue. It has not.
It has been suggested ROH needs TV. They do not unless they are paid to provide their show and at least break even. ROH had TV briefly in Philadelphia on WGTW-TV, payiong for the time slot weekly, and canceled that deal after a few months. The TV was not helping them draw and was cutting nto DVD sales. They had been warned going in that they would lose money, but too many see TV as a holy grail. It usually is not. It's usually just another expense.
ROH house shows are down in attendance, and several planned shows in Florida were cancelled then rescheduled to next year.
Only NYC & Chicago have really been drawing the crowds ROH needs and expects.
After last month's Philadephia show Silkin was close to shutting down ROH altogether. Too much money was being spent, and too little was coming in.
Other ROH Management convinced Silkin to keep the company running, and to let Gabe Saposky go, and in the process make changes beyond the booking alone.
Card budgets need to be cut. Towns need to be booked to run at a profit regardless of draw even if it means reducing pay to some talent or reeducing the number of wrestlers booked p[er show, particularly fly-ins.
Whether PPV will continue is unknown. I'd recommend no. ROH needs to focus on events and DVDs, and story telling, alnost go back to the beginning in some ways. Their press release suggested that direction.
The current booking plan is to use a committee. Exactly who is on the committee has not been announced. For this group, whoever they turn out to be, to be sucessful, they first need to meet with Cary Silkin and find out exacting what he wants. It is his money after all. If they plan to repackage ROH, I'd focus on NE dates and run fewer shows, and go to the mid-west only once every two-three months. I'd cancel any new market unless indications are good for ticket sales, and regardless I'd underbook the cards. I'd try to sell ROH Shows to buildings for a guaranteed fee.
There will be no quick fix, but if the bleeding can be stopped, Cary Silkin & ROH can survive.
I didnt post in N&R due to lack of a good source. Saying that, Behrens does seem to know what he is talking about when he writes these articals. During the arguements ive had with other members on this site about ROH going forward i always used the poor financial situation as a reason why they seem to be going backwards. Maybe now that people who are somewhat well known in the industry are sayin what i have said for ages, people will start to take it in.

I do not like this one bit. ROH has a knack for finding phenomenal talents from all around the world and showcasing them brilliantly. At one point this year two former Ring Of Honor Champions were sitting pretty at the top of the two biggest American companies at the same time. We had CM Punk on Raw as World Heavyweight champ and Samoa Joe as TNA's World Champion. Proof positive that ROH is great at finding and developing world class talent. Losing ROH would be horrible, not only for those of us who actually enjoy their style of wrestling, booking and working, but ultimately to the whole wrestling landscape because you would be looking at the lose of the biggest and most respected American indy organisation and a valuable proving ground for wrestlers looking to end up in WWE or TNA.
I'm crossing my fingers that they can weather this storm because of all the promotions I currently watch ROH is by far the one I most enjoy.
From what i understand, the financial situation isnt all that great in the States either. A lot of Indy companies i could see going under in the next year or so. WWE & TNA are not going anywhere. If ROH cut non essentials & reduce the size of their arenas then they should be fine also. Its the smaller companies that i seriously worry about the future of. ROH i think have enough about them to pull through even if by the skin of their teeth.
Saying ROH find the talent is a bit too much imo. The majority of their talent are proven elsewhere & relativly well known on the Indy scene. ROH just give them a bigger stage. Its great that they do that, but i dont credit them with finding many.

I dont think its a bad thing after all... Gabe could be getting a job in WWE so thats good. and i think it gives ROH a fresh start and a chance for change.. hopefully the end of AOTF

I'm not saying ROH pluck people from out of nowhere, but they do give the best of the indy's a place to really prove themselves and really brought smaller, lesser known talents like CM Punk, Samoa Joe, Matt Sydal, etc... Into a more prominent position.
It doesn't sound like Sapolsky will be joinging either TNA or WWE soon. Which is really too bad, as either of them could use the booking help. Looks like he's also no longer FIP, so for the moment, a guy regarded as probably the best booker around is unemployed.
As for ROH, I won't claim to be a huge fan. But I do like what I've seen. I can understand the hardcore fans being upset at the changes, but I'm interested to see where it goes. Change is a necessity in any business, especially when things aren't working like you believe they can.
ROH has always been about change, and a constant evolution since the beginning. It's one of the reason I love it so. I just don't want to lose such an important company to a damn economic crisis.
