So I just watched the Jacobs/Whitmer I Quit match from IWA, which was a very brutal match. I assumed the match happened in ROH in front of a few thousand people, and I was surprised to see it take place in a highschool gym when I downloaded the match. >_>
Basically, considering the brutality of the match and the blood loss, it got me thinking about whether it is necessary to go through such barbaric things in front of so few people. WWE superstars blade (or did before the ban) but these guys are making a lot of money and are worldwide stars. I would blade in front of the thousands in attendance and the millions watching at home, but I sure as hell wouldn't cut my face open for 200 people in a high school gym. I know Alex Shelley refuses to blade, and he is in TNA, which, while nowhere near WWE's level, is still a mainstream company with a large fanbase. These guys are blading and taking painful and dangerous bumps in front of a very small amount of people, and I assume, not getting paid too much for it.
So how far is too far? Obviously companies like CZW do the whole garbage wrestling shit with lighttubes etc, but even more moderate indys feature a lot of brutal matches on a very very small stage. Would you do that for such a small fanbase? Should indy guys be expected to take all these bumps and risk their health for this?
-------
Good match btw.

That would be my only issue with the match, the crowd was pretty sucky. You'd think for IWA's arguably biggest show to date they'd draw more but Ian Rotten is just a horrible promoter.
As for the question, I don't recall any of the bumps being that risky in the sense they could have gone wrong, just brutal. As far as I'm concerned it's entirely up the wrestlers, I can easily understand Shelley not wanting to cut his face for a living but if guys want to go the extra mile, it pays off (imo). Of course you have to remember they probably sell a good couple thousand of DVDs so it's not as if it's JUST the live crowd they are doing it for.

It's one common thought that Foley kept bringing up in his anti-hardcore promos from ECW. When it comes to indy hardcore wrestling, it's most likely more up to the wrestlers (Especially when it's done in a company that doesn't do it often). If someone like Whitmer and Jacobs wants to take a couple years off of their career to entertain a few hundred fans, then so be it. I know for me, I wouldn't put myself through it unless either the money was right or it was my chance to really get notice (If a WWE agent was watching in the crowd).

I wasn't referring to that match exclusively. For dangerous spots, I think some of the stuff guys like Jack Evans and Teddy Hart do would fit the bill. This particular match was just about the blood and the brutality.
And yeah I realise it isn't JUST the live crowd. I thought it might come across that way when I posted it. However, it just looks bad seeing guys bleeding all over the mat in a shitty little highschool gym with a couple of hundred bloodthirsty fans in attendance.

But why would a WWE agent be impressed by a bloodbath when they aim the product at 10 year olds and have actually banned blading from their product? You would be better off having a boring match full of restholds and nothing of note.

First off, stop trying to pigeon hole the WWE into only looking for one thing. Obviously, if it's just a spot match filled with weapons, it won't be impressive. But if you're able to put on one hell of a match and show that you were willing to do anything to make it as good as possible, it should raise a few eyebrows.
