William Regal and Lance Storm vs The Hurricane and Goldust
Storm and Regal are the surviving remnants of The UnAmericans. Since forming the team, they had been undefeated on Raw. Since Booker is in the main event, Goldust is teaming with another random face. The faces control early on. Hurricane with a neckbreaker only gets a two with the ref out of position. The heels take over and Storm hits his awesome heel kick. Regal nails some very weak knee strikes to Hurricane. The heels work over Hurricane until he can get the hot tag to Goldust. Goldust gets a Northern Lariat from Regal and Storm rolls Goldie up for the pin. Well that was easy. Hometown native, Tommy Dreamer, runs out from the crowd and attacks the heels with a kendo stick. He's still upset from the pair hurting his jaw in a previous Raw match. This is just another match to boost up the push of the faces for their upcoming title reign. Nothing outstanding here, however; it is a step above the crap matches that Heat produced before PPV's in '03. 3 Minutes. 1 1/2 Stars.

3 Minute Warning and Rico vs Bubba Ray, Spike and Jeff Hardy - Tables Match
3 Minute Warning is of course Rosey (If there was one person who deserved to be called SHIT, it was him) and Jamal (Hmm...looks a lot like a gangsta version of Umaga). Since coming to Raw after Vengeance, they had been bullying everyone Bischoff wanted. Their opponents are the first to really stand up against them. Bubba and Jeff continues their yearly trend of being partners and opponents at the PPV. The rules are simple, first team to put all three members of the opposite team through tables, wins. It should be noted that the location of this event is Madison Square Garden. MSG hosted the first ever Table's Match in the WWE. Ironically, the participates included Hardy and Bubba on opposite teams. The faces get the best of the heels early on sending them all out to the outside. Bubba calls for some tables. The heels attacks Duds and Hardy on the outside. A table is set up on the inside with Rosey missing Hardy with a splash and sending himself through the tables. It seems as if they're back to the rules of having to be put through a table by an opponent since Rosey isn't eliminated. Hardy goes for a top rope cross boy on Rosey, but Rosey fails to catch him. Spike gets a bit cocky and goes for an Acid Drop on Rico, but 3MW catches him. Nice catapult alley oop by 3MW sending Spike crashing through a table. Jeff is thrown into the fans by Rosey. By the fans exit, Rosey sets up a table and lays Jeff on it. Bubba gets away from Jamal and Rico. Rosey is still setting Jeff up, making him the slowest wrestler in tables match history. Bubba attacks Rosey and sets Rosey on the table. Jeff climbs into the fans and up to the top of the entrance and hits a huge Swanton Bomb through the table eliminating Rosey. For 2002, this was a shock to see. Jeff is looking oddly good tonight, nailing his spots with the exception of the cross body which I wouldn't even blame him for. Jeff goes to run the crowd barrier, but slips off and botches the spot. I guess I spoke too soon. Jamal sets Hardy on a table and hits a top rope splash to the outside eliminating Hardy. No wonder I loved Jamal and hated Rosey back then. Jamal was so agile for his size while Rosey was a slow worthless worker. Back in, Jamal sets Bubba up for a top rope hurricrana through a table. Jamal taunts the fans some and Bubba takes the distraction to Power Bomb Jamal through the table. Out from the crowd, Rosey returns attacking Bubba. It's now a three-on-one on Bubba. A table is set up, but out from the back, D-Von Dudley hits the ring attacking the heels. 3D~! to Rico through the table. Bubba is the sole survivor. It would later be revealed that D-Von was one of the four wrestlers (Along with Maven, Ivory and Val Venis) that was traded to Raw from SD for The Big Show. D-Von somewhat spoiled it on the Velocity before the event wearing his 3D boots for his match against some jobber. As for the match, it was your basic spotty table match with little psychology. The storytelling would finally come into play when the handicap attack on Bubba started though. If you look back at the history of the table match, most of the terrible ones are with wrestlers who aren't capable or willing to do any major spots. Luckily, this match had Spike, Jeff and Jamal. You're never going to see a great tables match, but this was above average. The botches by Rosey and Hardy did hurt the match some though. Overall, fun way to start off the show.14 Minutes. 3 Stars.
Jamie Noble vs Billy Kidman - Cruiserweight Championship
This would be a rematch of Vengeance. To build up to the event, Kidman had secured two pinfall victories over Noble (One of which was a singles non-title match). Noble seemingly couldn't figure out a way to pin the former champ. Match is fairly simple - Kidman has a reverse for nearly everything Noble wants to do. The moves Noble does connect with (Tiger Bomb and a bad ass DDT), Kidman kicks out of. Kidman nails a great BK Bomb (Great move, terrible name) from the top rope. Noble runs into Nadia, taking her out of the match. Kidman connects with the Shooting Star Press to pin Jamie Noble, finally ending Noble's title reign. Up to this point Noble had been the longest reigning WWE CW champion. That reign was easily the most beneficial CW title reign in WWE history. Noble got to defend the title on a few PPV's (Something damn near unheard of in later years) and actually had a gimmick to get over. Sadly, the crowd wasn't too into it. I wouldn't blame that on Noble though. The WWE audience just had a pretty hard time getting into Kidman throughout his WWE run. The other thing that hurt the match was Cole and Tazz using the first few minutes to build up the other SD matches on the night. Finally, it's hard to get too much love for a match when it was only built up for a couple of weeks. Given some time, this could of been a much better affair. It's still a pretty good match though and a rarity to see the CW title at the Survivor Series.8 Minutes. 2 1/2 Stars.
Trish Stratus vs Victoria - Women's Championship
Victoria had just been brought up to the main roster from OVW. She quickly attacked Trish on Raw setting up their No Mercy match. After loosing, she continued to show some craziness to her character. She began talking about their past together and how Trish screwed her out of a WWE contract. IIRC, the hints at the past came off as very lesbian-ish. Victoria uses a broom while Trish brings out a trash can breaking Victoria's nose. God, what is it about this PPV and broken women noses? A lot more useless weapons are introduced including a ironing table. Ah, I get it, they're women, so the only weapons they know to use has to be an ironing table. That doesn't sound sexist at all. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. On the outside, Victoria botches a fire extinguisher for a few moments until finally exploding it into Trish's eyes. Hmm...I doubt that's the first time something exploded into Trish's face. Victoria finishes Trish off with a simple snap suplex. We have a new Women's Champion. This match benefits from being different from most women's matches. For just the second time in history (First was Ivory vs Tori which I have on tape somewhere) the woman's get to put on a hardcore match. There's still the normal high amount of botches and awkwardness for a woman's match though. The stipulation really hides the lack of quality in the match. There's little psychology and just worthless weapons use. That being said, at least it's something different for the division. That alone makes this a standout for the women. 7 Minutes. 2 Stars.
Brock Lesnar vs The Big Show - WWE Championship
After No Mercy, Brock was banged up and debuting Big Show attacked The Undertaker. Show was in his yearly short lived monster push. Heyman was worried that Lesnar couldn't beat Show because of the effects of the Hell in a Cell. Lesnar proved Heyman wrong on the Smackdown leading into the PPV beating the hell out of Show. Brock is surprisingly very over tonight. Infact, he's finally able to wake up the crowd from the deadness thus far. Lesnar hits a couple suplexes on Show, but ends up running into the ref knocking him out. Heyman throws in a chair to his client. Lesnar tries to use it, but Show goes for a chokeslam. That's reversed and a few chair shots prepares Show to get a F5 by Lesnar. A new ref comes out to count, but Heyman pulls him out. Heyman just pulled a Fuji~!!!!1! Lesnar chases Heyman around, but comes back into the ring right into a chair shot by Show. Chokeslam on the chair and Show covers Lesnar to win his second WWE title (Both at Survivor Series). Post-match sees Heyman jumping in the arms of Show celebrating. The crowd hated the outcome. No one cared about Show at the time and it was beyond stupid to take the belt off of a super over Lesnar. This would also be one of the worst booked matches of the year. Heyman turned on Lesnar because he was worried he couldn't beat Show, yet Lesnar proved he could. The turn also ruined the monster push of The Big Show. It was hard to take Show as a threat when he was so easily dominated by Lesnar and virtually beaten in such a short match. That's the other problem of the match, it's so short. Lesnar just had a 30 minute match the previous show, but now can't even go five minutes? Terrible. Luckily, Show as a main eventer experiment #456 was ended at Armageddon. This would be a major moment in the decline of SD's fall '02 quality. 4 Minutes. 1 Star.
Edge and Rey Mysterio vs Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit vs Los Guerreros - WWE Tag Team Championships
In just one month, the newly created WWE tag team titles had became the most exciting title in the WWE at the time. Just a week or so before, Edge and Mysterio won the titles in a great 2/3 Falls Match. All six man had been putting up MOTYC's on a weekly basis on SD. This match is elimination style, so last team remaining are the champs. Mysterio and Benoit starts off. Mysterio must have been hanging out with Jeff Hardy earlier because he can't seem to not botch every few minutes. He messes up hitting the ropes, falls when he jumps to the top rope and is just very awkward at times. When Rey isn't botching, he's hitting some great high flying moves. Go figure. Everyone gets a chance to be in the ring with Rey while Edge is just hanging out on the apron. I guess he's Warrior this year. Angle looks to tag one of the Guerrero's but they step down. By time he gets a tag to Benoit, Mysterio gets the hot tag to Edge. Spinning heel kick by Edge to Benoit. Everyone heads in the ring and we get a large sequence of MOVEZ~~! Although to be fair, it's extremely exciting. Crossface/Ankle Lock to Edge. Mysterio breaks it up. Benoit with the Crossface on Edge and Angle with the Ankle Lock to Eddie. Chavo smashes one of the WWE titles over the head of Benoit. Angle throws Chavo out of the ring, but not before grabbing the belt. Benoit stands up and finds Angle with the title. Some pushing and shoving between Angle and Benoit. Mysterio takes Angle out of the ring and Edge spears Benoit to pin and eliminate Benoit and Angle. Loud boos from MSG. As luck will have it, the WWE booked their most popular team of the night to be eliminated first. Benoit and Angle suplexes the rest of the wrestlers before they argue back to the lockerroom. Once Angle and Benoit are gone, the match reverts back to a regular tag match. Guerrero's cheats and double teams the faces. Eddie is getting a decent reaction, but for some reason Edge and Mysterio are getting zero reaction. Of course Chavo isn't either, but that's nothing new. Nice assisted Hurricrana by Edge and Mysterio (Old school filthy animals). Rey looks to do the 619, but Eddie isn't in position. Rey finally hits the 619 to Eddie who oversells it like crazy. Rey goes for the West Coast Pop, but can't get his footing on the ropes. Luckily, Chavo was there to hit Rey with the belt, making it seem like Rey didn't both anything. Edge and Chavo fights on the outside and Eddie locks in a weak Lasso from El Paso (What ever happened to that move?) to make Rey tap. Just like that, we have NEW WWE Tag Team Champions. At the time, these guys were putting up insane matches on a weekly basis. Especially after No Mercy, the expectations for this match was huge. The fact that they got such a long match and were after the WWE title match showed that the WWE knew they had something special. However, with all of that, they needed a flawless match to live up to hopes. Sadly, this wasn't that. Mysterio just had such a hard time. I am wondering if his knee was already messed up by now. He would miss around a month and a half after this event for knee surgery. If that's the case, I can understand why he wouldn't be perfect. If Mysterio was hurt, they shouldn't have had him in the ring for such a long time. He was in the match almost the entire time. Even though it doesn't compare to some of the past SD six tag bouts, it does have many great moments. Angle was extremely over tonight which really helped for the first half. Sadly, it also hurt the match once he and Benoit were eliminated. As crazy as this may sound today, but when I first found out Los Guerrero's won the titles the next night, I felt the titles dropped in credibility BIG TIME. If I could change one thing about this match, it'll be to make it a triple threat instead of eliminations. It would of really improved the overall match had they ended there. On a positive note, who would have imagined that 6 years later, all six men would have been a World Champion? 20 Minutes. 3 3/4 Stars.
Out in the ring, Chris Nowinski comes out to call the New York fans stupid. Loud 'Shut the fuck up' chants can be heard. Matt Hardy arrives to the scene to tell Chris that he's wrong. The NY fans aren't stupid, they're losers. After some debating, they agree that the NY fans are both, they're lopid. I'm feeling like a stupid loser for not pressing the 'Next' button on my remote. Scott Steiner's music hits and he makes his return to the WWE after 9 years. Steiner easily destroys the heels. Steiner is MEGA OVER. Don't worry, it won't last much longer.
Triple H vs Rob Van Dam vs Chris Jericho vs Booker T vs Kane vs Shawn Michaels - World Heavyweight Championship - Elimination Chamber
This has been building since Summerslam when Triple H attacked Michaels after their match. From there, Hunter was made WHC and continued to win over the faces by cheating. While that was going on, Jericho and Booker had been feuding over the tag team titles (Along with Christian and Goldust). By now, everyone should know the rules. If not, the chamber has 4 mini chambers (In the future called pods) where one man will be in there. 2 wrestlers start and after every 5 minutes a wrestler is let out of the inner chamber. Elimination occurs by pinfall or submission. Before the match, Ross botches a couple of facts. First, that if Kane wins tonight, he'll be the first masked World Champion. Hmm...wasn't he World Champion before? Second, he claimed Hunter was 0-6 at Survivor Series at this point. Hmm, he didn't wrestle at 1997, 1998, 2001. That means he only wrestled at 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2000. Granted I'm not a math professor, but that hardly seems like six. Final man standing walks out as champion. RVD and Triple H starts it out. Within minutes, Hunter is introduced to the steel on the outside. Hunter is already bleeding. RVD head on top of Jericho's chamber, but Jericho grabs his foot from the chain link. Hunter takes over and punishes RVD on the steel. 5 minutes are up and Jericho is the first to come out. Jericho and Hunter double teams RVD by throwing him over and over again on the steel. RVD pulls a Spiderman by wanting to splash on Jericho, but Chris ducks. That's okay since RVD just grabs the chains. Booker T is the next one out. He easily takes out the heels. RVD heads to the top for a 5 Star Frogsplash, but thinks better of it. Instead he climbs on top of the inner chamber. 5 Star Frogsplash to Hunter! This would be the move that crushed Hunter's throat. RVD is hurt though and Booker easily pins him. Booker covers an injured Hunter, but Hebner is too busy talking to RVD to count. Kane is out now and uses Jericho as a lawn dart against the chains. Jericho is booted THROUGH the glass. Nice holy shit chant. Booker gets chokeslammed by Kane and Jericho with the Lionsault finishes Booker off. Michaels comes in and quickly gets chokeslammed. All three bitter enemies team up with the Superkick/Pedigree/Lionsault combo. Jericho pins Kane eliminating him. Somehow, even with a four-on-two face advantage, Michaels is left only with heels. Jericho and Hunter teams up against Michaels. Michaels gets introduced to the steel by the heels. Jericho covers Michaels, but Hunter pulls him off. Well that's not smart, no wonder you're "0-6" at Survivor Series, Trips. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. Jericho and Hunter gets in a shoving match. Jericho locks in the Wall of Jericho. Long period of Hunter trying to hang on. Sweet Chin Music to Jericho out of nowhere. Michaels falls on top of Jericho pinning him. After thirty minutes, we get the matchup that this match was built around. Let's face it, everything else was just time filler. Michaels is thrown through a chamber glass. Pedigree~! 1...2...NO. Michaels kicks out. Hunter goes for it again, but Michaels backdrops him. SUPERKICK! Michaels covers Hunter...1...2...3! NEW World Heavyweight Champion. Michaels celebrates while Hunter is looked after by some medical staff. Whenever a company comes up with a new stipulation match, it's either sink or swim. The single most important thing for a debut stipulation match needs to be successful is the right participates. As it turns out, they had their MVP for this match that ensured this would be a thumbs up. That MVP wouldn't be the winner though. Rob Van Dam needs to be credited for finding ways to use the chamber and make it exciting. No one used the chamber as much as Rob did, even if it was only for a third of the match. Especially with how over Michaels was in MSG, the WWE didn't have to worry about having that huge story at the end. But they did need for match to feel different from all others and Rob did that. The match was something different which made it pretty enjoyable. Luckily, it wasn't all hype and no filler unlike other WWE stipulation matches. This would end up being one of four Raw MOTYC's. 40 Minutes. 4 Stars.
Overall
This event has gone on to be one of the more popular PPV's ever. I often hear how it's a possible PPV of the year for 2002 and even one of the best PPV's ever. Infact, I would even agree to that in previous talks. However, watching this for the first time in a few years, it doesn't age well. Most of the matches were disappointments. Not to say they were bad, but they could of been so much better. The only one that was great and didn't disappoint was the main event, which with all of the hype and buildup took up over half of the PPV. This might be the best PPV of the year, however; to say it's one of the best PPV's ever is laughable. I really wanted to love this, but it just wasn't the same quality as I remember.
Best Match: Elimination Chamber Match Worst Match: Brock Lesnar vs The Big Show
Overall Grade: B

I think you underated Show/Lesnar, but I see your point. I think for 5-10 minutes what they did was good, but yeah it was a travesty you have Lesnar beat in such a way.
I'm buying this show soon btw. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

That match was under 5 minutes I believe. They did do a good job considering the time available, but it is pretty bad seeing a title match that short on PPV. Deserves more than 1* though.
And yeah, you should buy it. Possibly one of my favourite shows. I am surprise Jim rated the Elimination Match as highly as I do. I was expecting him to give it less than 4*, especially with Michaels winning. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. . I thought it was very entertaining, as was the tag match, which you probably rated about right too.
The Cruiser match was a highly enjoyable watch too.

For the Smackdown 6, this was terrible. This was the first time I really got into the match though. The ending and beginning is still a disappointment. However, once Edge tags in and up til Angle/Benoit's elimination, it's incredible.

The match went JUST over 4 minutes. Within 3 minutes, there was a ref bump. It went one minute (!) longer than the Heat match. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Actually i agree with Horror Fan, It deserves 1 star, The Match sucked. It is a WWE Championship match at a major ppv, having it in a 4 Min match kinda defeats the purpose IMO.

True but they were pushed for time and the only REAL purpose of the match was for Heyman to screw Lesnar, cost him the title and side with Show.

Which in itself didn't make any sense since Heyman did it because he didn't believe Lesnar could beat Show. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Did you also notice Angle making himself run into the corner post after Rey flipped over the turnbuckles? To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
No one ever mentions that when listing the botches in that match.

Surprised you praised the opener at all actually, after reading through it again. I thought that was exactly the sort of match you hated, but yeah I agree it was a fun start to the show. Some of the botches were pretty horrible though lol.
