One of the greatest story to tell in any variety of entertainment-it being Movies, sports or wrestling-is The Cinderella Story.
In The Cinderella story which protagonist is Cinderella.
Cinderella is the most unlikely maiden to get married to the Prince and turn Princess. Much, because she doesn't seem worthy, because of her inferior state as a servant, although she had the right to be in an egual status as her stepsisters.
She might have the beauty, but her chances just seem slim, because of all the obstacles that are in front of her.
In wrestling there have been some similiar stories. Worthy to be called a Cinderella Story. One of those that might be remembered was the Rey Mysterio storyline. Where Rey Mysterio beat the odds, won the Royal Rumble and headed to wrestlemania where he captured the World Heavyweight Title.
Currently there has been one similiar Cinderella Storyline going on, which protagonist is smackdown's wrestling superstar Jeff Hardy.
Jeff Hardy has been the constant underachiever. He's has the ability of being a World Champion, but he continously fails to achieve it.
Just like Ciderella he finds to be near his dream, in Jeff Hardy's case the world Title is his dream. But he's unable to capture that dream. He wants to return to the World Title scene, but he must surpass his obstacles.
In the end just like every great fairy tale ending, Jeff Hardy will achieve his dream. When midnight strikes he won't be leaving any glass slippers, but he'll be gaining World Championship Gold. Probally afterwards he'll be carried out in a Carrige like a prince. Although He might not be King, he would have dethrone him.

Chris Benoit fits the bill better than anyone else I can think of...
UH OHz
Errr...Eddie I guess. A great wrestler becoming overcome with drug addiction, then being able to fight back and make his way back to the top, only to have his past come back to haunt him and cause his death. Fairytales have sad endings too.

Eddie and Benoit are both great picks. They had been in wrestling a long time but never reached that level before, and they both had to overcome setbacks to reach their goal. Eddie in particular had to overcome his demons, and that makes it a pretty good Cinderella story in my opinion. They may do a similar thing with R-Truth if he ever wins a title, because his promo packages before his debut had him talking about how he had made some mistakes in the past. Jeff Hardy, as mentioned, would qualify for this if he won a World Title, but I am now fairly certain that he never will.
The way you described a Cinderella story in the first post, even John Cena's first title win could qualify for that, with JBL the rich investor with all the money and luxury, and Cena with a less priveledged background, fighting his way to the top due to his guts and determination. JBL made it obvious that he didn't believe Cena was in his league, and that Cena was just a thug etc who shouldn't be respected like JBL was, but Cena walked away from Wrestlemania 21 as WWE Champion (after a bad match).
Hmmm I think the brackets kind of ruined that one...

What? To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. Cena didn't grow up in the 'Hood'. He was living the life of a suburban middle class family when he was young.

Alright then, The Undertaker isn't really from Death Valley. >_>
I'm talking kayfabe. They definitely put him over as a guy who has had to work hard for everything he has got and didn't have a priveleged upbringing.
EDIT: And Steve not only beat me to it, but put it better than I did too. >_>

How kayfabe is it when they talked to Cena's family several times for their shows and even did a 'Best they were superstars' segment on Cena showing how he grew up in a fairly safe middle class place?

Was this after the JBL feud or before? Remember WWE love to rewrite history and forget about things once the angle is over.
Either way, they definitely built him up like the average Joe, as Steve said. Rather like Steve Austin was the average hard working guy standing up to authority, Cena was the hard working 'everyman' standing up to an evil rich guy. There was a sharp contrast between JBL's suits and limos, and Cena's chains, demin shorts etc.

I wouldn't consider Cena a Cinderella story. Maybe if he was up against the odds against a capable heel, it would be different. However, JBL was a heel who through luck or interference managed to retain his title for 9 months. At no point was he booked to look like a guy who could beat anyone. Especially since the match was at Wrestlemania, it was clear who was going to win.
Cinderella stories need to have a sense of doubt to them. Even with winning the Royal Rumble, there was doubt that Chris Benoit could win the title. After all, he had to contend with two of the biggest (kayfabe) stars of the past twenty years in one match. The Cinderella story only continued for Benoit when he was booked against Hunter or Shawn for his entire reign. Even at the height of his reign, it seemed like it could always come crashing down at any moment. The longer it went on, the more of a dream it was like.
For Cena, he went into a match where the outcome was obvious against a man who was hardly an unstoppable force (Unlike Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Brock Lesnar or others) and once he was given the strap, he got the superman treatment. Superman never had glass slippers, nor did he ever have to worry that the dream like life would come to an end. He was born a superhero and died (Is he dead? >_> ) a superhero. Benoit came into the business as an underdog and was shown fighting for every single match for that victory.
