...You are only particularly great as either a face or a heel, rather than both?
A lot of my favourite wrestlers are great in both roles, at least in my opinion. You take guys like Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, Undertaker and they are pretty great at both. I would agree that wrestlers deserve a lot of credit for this as it shows versatility and shows that they can play different characters and get the crowd into the match in more than one way (ie they can draw heat when required and cheers when required, while remaining very entertaining in both roles).
Then you have guys like Edge. I never felt he was anything special as a face. Good wrestler? Yes, but his character was never really interesting enough for me to care a great deal. In Edge and Christian he was amazing, and since his singles heel turn and main event push he has been great again. I would consider him one of my all time favourite heels, but as a face... he just doesn't work. Everything that is great about him only comes when he is a heel.
Perhaps to a lesser extent, many would say the same thing about Triple H. Even CM Punk gets accused of failing as a face.
Does this mean you are less worthy of being called a great wrestler?

In a sense it kinda does but when you think of wrestlers from the past who were always face that doesn't really discredit them. What I am trying to say if you are given multiple chances at being face or heel and you fail everytime then you should lose a rung or two on the ladder of greatness.
But now when you talk about somebody like Ricky Steamboat who played a face his whole career and never had the opportunity to play the heel then I don't think it deminishes what he did at all. To me it's harder to stay over as a whole career face or whole career heel than to switch every once in a while to freshin things up.

Triple H deserves to be in your first category. He can get massive heat as a heel, like in 03, and he can get massive cheers as a face, as he currently gets now.
I guess it all boils down to your gimmick. Some people only have a gimmick that works one way. Like Rey Mysterio could never, ever be heel. It just wouldn't work. And then you have others like Umaga, his gimmick would never work as a face. it's just your gimmick and how you play it.

Triple H wasn't getting great "We love to boo you" heat, he was getting "Get the fuck off tv, we hate you" heat. There's a big difference.
I would definitely praise someone more if they can get over as a heel and a face. So many people have shown how hard it is just getting over the first time. That's why someone who can get over in a totally different gimmick and alignment deserves praise. Hulk Hogan especially, the guy went from being a huge face attraction for over a decade to becoming a huge heel attraction over the course of a month or so.
At the same time, xstat32x brings up a good point too. Someone like Ricky Steamboat or Tito Santana should be praised for remaining over for years without much change to their character. Everyone from The Rock to Hulk Hogan has had moments where they're characters weren't fresh and that caused the fans to boo them. Santana and Steamboat both have the benefit of never being heels though. Although I doubt it, they never got the chance to prove that they would of been bad heels.

Think about this though, when The Rock was heel, was he cheered? With the exception of early on in his heel days (Summer of 97-Summer of 98), he always had people cheering him as a heel. Hell, he had more people cheering for him as Hollywood Rock than in 2002.
The Rock was a great entertainer, which made him a poor heel.

So you can't be a great heel if you are a great entertainer?

I don't know about that... rewatch the Torronto promo, or his WM19 match with Austin. The crowd clearly cheer for him at the start, but he makes them hate him. That to me is a great heel.

No, you can't be a great heel if the fans sing along with all of your promos and cheer for you. Kinda goes against what a heel is. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
Rewatch some of Rocky's Hollywood promos. At times he needs to tell them that "This isn't sing along with the great one" which gets a nice pop, but they still finish his popular sayings.
I'm not really saying it's Rocky's fault. The Rock was just too entertaining at times to hate him. However, it does make him a poor heel.
