Match Rate/Hate/Debate Thread

I know Capone, Paulzo and myself often give a brief review of matches we watch, and I feel it would be interesting to encourage others to do so and to discuss certain matches, and these threads have been sucessful on other forums I've been at so this could take off

The Undertaker vs Brock Lesnar – (Hell In A Cell) – No Mercy 2002
I'm a fan of the Undertaker, but fuck me he KILLED the final minutes of this match. It has a great set-up with Undertaker coming in with an broken hand plastered up that he uses as a weapon and serves as a target for Lesnar, so already you've got great psycology that makes it stand out from all the other Hell In A Cell's. For the most part it is a great match, Undertaker brings alot of intensity and really lays the beat down on Lesnar (and Heyman

) greatly. Lesnar's working on Taker's injured hand and ripping off the cast is inevitable but also a great focus in the match. My favourite part is when Taker is on the top rope and Lesnars swings from the top of the Cell kicking Taker in the head. But it all goes downhill from there as Taker hangs on to the top of the Cell with HIS BROKEN HAND before giving Lesnar and elbow drop. If only he had used his other hand that would have been a great spot. I can forgive him for punching Lesnar with the broken hand as he makes it look like it hurts (up until this point his selling has been very good) but to chokeslam Lesnar with the broken hand and to make the cut-throat sign with it is just ridiculous. Undertaker brings alot to the match, but also takes alot away from it at a vital point. And this is coming from one of his biggest fans. Great match killed by total failure selling at the end.

The Age Of The Fall vs The Motor City Machine Guns - Tag Wars 2008
First things first, the Briscoes match fucking owns this match. That said, it is a very good match, I'll talk about the positives first. There was a lot of fun and exciting sequences throughout the match. I know some people will be like "ohnoes MoVoeZ~!", but it never gets ridiculous or over the top and the match flows smoothly. Tyler continues to impress, putting out a great effort with his selling and offence, and Jacobs who usually bores me brings alot to this match too with some good heel work. The Shelley/Jacobs parts were also alot of fun, if nothing special. But whilest you have Tyler being awesome and the Shelley/Jacobs hate, Sabin is kinda just... there. That brings me to the negatives, I just couldn't get int the Guns as faces. They seemed to be doing everything right, but I just didn't care. It felt as if the only reason they were faces was because everyone hates Jacobs and because they do loads of flashy moves. The match also had alot less structure to it than the Briscoes match. In the Briscoes match, you had 5-10 minutes feeling out process with the chain wrestling and antics, then the Briscoes dominated with great tag wrestling (cutting the ring in half, quick tags) before the Guns took over and did the same then the match broke down into a frenzy. This match seemed to have about 5 minutes of chai wrestling and antics before breaking down too quickly imo. Great exciting match, but hardly flawless.

I disliked the match and I think the Briscoes/Kota & Aries was actually the MOTN. Jimmy was annoying the fuck out of me with his "intense" glare when he was on the ring apron and the match just was to chaotic. I never thought I would say this but I actually felt the overkill and I stopped feeling the falls after awhile. As you said before Sabin kinda seemed there and that reminds me allot of Super Dragon & B-boy vs. Richards & Strong where B-boy was just there. I actually felt it was him and Tyler opposed to just him. Great tag match but not that great. Speaking of Strong & Richards.....

PWG - El Generico & QuickSilver vs. Roderick Strong & Davey Richards for the PWG World Tag Team Titles
For people that do not know, this is the infamous match that is QuickSilver's last and that has Roderick Strong BLEEDING OUT OF HIS FUCKING EYE! You can tell Strong & Richards are the heels since they blantley jump before the bell and are just taking a shit over the fans(Well Davey was). Strong & Richards just beat the shit out of Cape Fear and as soon as Generico gets the hot tag, Stron gets fucked. I don't know how but Strong is busted from a cross body and I think has a concussion throughout the whole match. Supposedly Silver suffered a concussion in this but he didn't look like it compared to Strong. The guy was out of it and big ups to him finishing the match despite him just being off after his eye started to bleed. Richards was just a dick to the fans and started calling the people who were booing him homosexuals(Seem like him and Steen are homophobic that night). Great match but you could tell Strong's gash was the reason it slowed down. Didn't figure out the story in the match yet but will after a rewatch. **** if not more.

Jacobs did fail at trying to be intense, but I liked the part where he bottled it against Shelley and tagged Black back in, and the whole spitting in each other's faces, I lost count of how many times they did that.

I honestly am thinking of giving the match ***** just becaus of Shelly's awesomeness. Him walking over and bitch slapping Tyler three unnecessary times is one of the greatest things I have ever seen.

Jacobs really got on my tits in that match, I just can't stand him at the moment. Pretty great stuff though, like I said before. I've got it at ****1/4 so I can't really disagree with what you said or anyfink. I'll probably write summink about KENTA/Kobashi vs. Kensuke Office later, I loved that too.

Welcome to the "Steve, Capone and Paul discuss wrestling by themselves again" thread.

How about a match that I've seen many people rate it as a MOTYC last year. The Briscoes vs Kevin Steen and El Generico Ladder War from Man Up.

I've enjoyed some of their other matches against each other, but I found this match to be incredibly boring. Hitting a guy with a chair is great, but how am I supposed to care when you do it 30 times and you barely even react to being hit? This match went about 30 minutes and yet not a single time was I into the match. When it was over, I couldn't believe this was the match that everyone (not just here) kept raving on and on about. Complete and utter shit.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

I'm going to have to say so. I thought the match was great and I don't understand how a 5 or 10 minute brawl overshadows these guys brutalizing each other with ladders for the majority of the match. You didn't get into the match when Jay got creamed by Generico with a chair when they finally got to the ring or when the Briscoes tossed his ass into aa ladder? I mean these were some crazy F'n spots when the ladder got introduced everything went to insane levels. If it was the same as the other TLC/Ladder matches then I can understand but the Briscoes/Steenrico tried something completey different and I think everyone felt that it worked. Wasn't my MOTY but I wouldn't blame someone who did consider it. I really suggest you watch the match again.

Crazy spots are wasted when you don't sell. I'm all for blood feuds that must end in a match were the wrestlers are just brutalizing each other. Magnum TA vs Tully Blanchard I Quit is one of my favorite matches. However, I got nothing out of this match. I wasn't even sure how to rate it after I got finished watching it. How can you give a star rating to a match that wasn't even really a match? This is one of the few moments I was ashamed to call myself a ROH fan. Since I first started watching ROH, I felt as if they knew how to put on a match. When it comes down to it, why should I bother to watch one of your matches if you don't even really put effort into it? Thinking of some crazy ladder spot isn't putting effort into a match. Making me believe that it's real is effort. If I had my choice, I'd rather watch a Top of the Trophy match, then this.
