The most basic explanation of a 'Mark' is someone who thinks wrestling is real and believes everything they see, whereas 'smarks' know more about the business and what goes on behind the scenes, including the IWC who read spoilers, rumours, backstage reports of heat etc.
After joining forums I became familiar with the use of the word 'mark' to describe someone who is biased towards or biased against a certain company. For example, a WWE mark would only watch WWE, or if they did watch other promotions, they would just criticise them no matter what they did. An 'indy mark' would be biased against mainstream wrestling and give them no credit for any matches they put on.
Then there are marks of certain wrestlers. Guys who believe one wrestler is the best ever and won't hear anything bad about them, overlooking their obvious weaknesses and insisting that they should be pushed no matter what.
However, there are other references of the word 'mark' outside these definitions. For example, I am often called a 'WWE mark' on these forums. Why? Because I enjoy the current product and don't say much about it which is negative. Well first of all, I am not a critic, and being a fan I am bound to try and put a positive spin on things, because wrestling is one of the most enjoyable things in my life and WWE is my favourite promotion. Secondly, I watch ROH and am just getting into puro, and I really enjoy them. I would also watch TNA regularly if I could, despite being disappointed with the current product, and I do want them to suceed. Thirdly, I criticised WWE when I thought it was bad, eg mid 2007 when every PPV was dull. Now, I truly believe WWE is in a great run of form so I say they are. I still acknowledge negatives, such as Punk's booking right now.
So in this context, what the hell is a 'mark'. Someone who talks about a promotion positively? That makes no sense. If I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't be a fan. So is any fan of a particular promotion a 'mark'. despite knowing about and indeed spending money on and watching other promotions, and taking great enjoyment from them?

The whole termonology used by fans on the internet annoys me. We are all fans, some are biased, some are idiots, some are smart. Labeling people in groups is something I don't really agree with.

A mark is the most biased term possible to use. Paulz0 for example, could be a Kobashi mark. You are an Edge mark. I am an Undertaker and CM Punk mark. In my mind, its someone who follows something and actually really likes what they are watching and would defend it if necessary and think it to be better than other things.
Example (somewhat hypocritical): If I am called a WWE mark, for loving what I see and enjoying the positives that outweight the negatives, wouldn't that make me a fan? Well anyway if I'm an "E" mark so to speak, Steve would be a lucha mark, Capone would be a PWG mark, Paulz0 would be a puro mark, etc.
I think the term mark used as an insult is stupid, as I look at is as just a positive term rather than a way to insult someone.

Why do we have to be marks? What makes someone a mark and not a fan? If someone labels me into a group like you just did there (I actually prefer US & Japan to Mexico) I take offence because to me, that person is thinking that I am biased.

Why am I a WWE mark? Maybe I take offense to that!
But seriously, as I said if used I think it more so makes you a fan and if used as an insult its stupid. Basically its calling you a lucha fan.

But that is my point. The word 'mark' has negative connotations. It insinuates that Steve is biased and can not judge matches for what they are, because he favours one particular style and doesn't give others the credit they deserve.

The term ''mark'' just screams biased and one sided to me. I'd like to think I'm different from that and that I can find good points and faults in everything. It's like Steve said, you don't need to be labelled, you can tell who's a fucking idiot and who is pretty sensible without branding them which, in my eyes, is rather condescending on every level.

Yeah which is why it is ridiculous when certain members say I am 'just a WWE mark' or a 'Cena mark'. It implies I don't know anything about wrestling, which is certainly disrespectful.

Agreed which is dumb and why I think the term "mark" should be replaced with "fan".
