What do you like about wrestling today compared to years gone by?
The opposite of my 'what you miss in wrestling' thread. Here, you can give things which you feel have improved in wrestling, or anything good which you see in wrestling today, which never existed in the past.
One thing I can think of is the variety of styles. As wrestling has evolved, more and more different styles have been incorporated. Even in WWE, you see MMA influencing wrestling. WWE are working stiffer than before. You see Lucha Libre with Rey Mysterio, you see high flyers, brawlers, technical wrestling etc. I think the variety in mainstream wrestling is better than ever before.

The mixture of styles in main stream. A decade and a half ago, it was rare to see lucha libre, Japan stiff/strong style, British chain wrestling, etc. in the US. At the same time it was rare to see the blend of styles in ONE athlete, like we now adays.
Also I think there is more appreciation by the actual fans for what the guys do. 10-15 years ago wrestling was still revealed as "fake" and alot of people, even fans themselves, discredited wrestling because of it. Now especially people realize the talent it takes to be a pro wrestler. (Fans of course, not fuck tard media)

I honestly cant say that I think anything in main stream wrestling at least is better than it was back in the day. Wrestling moves have been watered down so bad that at points in a match I get deja vu. The MMA style is only interesting if you are a MMA buff like Suffy. I enjoy a good MMA match every now and then, but I tune into WWE and TNA to see fast paced exciting wrestling, not cage fighting. The womans division for the most part has become nothing by a glorified ho- asis. TNA was doing good with their womans division, but as of late Angelina Love and Velvet Sky have been getting more airtime than a Gail Kim, ODB, Kong or Jackie Moore.
It seems like wrestling today focuses on their titles more than the non title rivalries which are often the key to developing characters. The storylines are pretty much bland, I don't find anything generally exciting or interesting about them. Sometimes it gets to the point where I wonder why both TNA and WWE pay a creative team or why they have one because I honestly feel I could pull better storylines out of my ass.
Right now there is no real competition between wrestling companies. TNA is trying to start a war with WWE, but they are too focused about what WWE is doing to focus on the things which are hurting the progression of their product. Meanwhile, WWE seems content to cruise along year after year taking their fans for granted. Every now and then they show signs of trying to improve, but if they had a real opposition, WWE would be a lot better than it is today. I'm not a huge indy buff, but I really don't see many indy promotions trying to knock each other off of the map. I think they worry more about their product and trying to gain fans. Maybe the main stream companies should take a page out of the indy companies play book.

Really? Nothing better about mainstream wrestling?
An obvious one for WWE: Production Values. Everything looks so much better with the new tron, HD etc.

Someone could easily say that the new set takes the focus away from the matches though. That huge bright set has to be a distraction to fans in the arena.
I love seeing all of the cheesy effects of the older years. Whether it's the disco beat in the intro to Primetime Wrestling or the cartoony logo's that was shown for every wrestler before their SNME match. Cheesy, but such a fun little touch.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think today WWE are more clever with their booking. People criticise it for being unpredictable, but it has come such a long way since the 80s-early 90s in terms of unpredictablity. You get feuds for all sorts of reasons, more unexpected title changes etc.

If anything, the booking has been far worst than in past years. Most of the time, people getting PPV title shots and reigns make little to no sense.

Looking back at some of the older PPV's it really seems as if Vince has a much better grasp for what PPV's should be (Even if he's whoring them out >_> ). Instead of being an extension of a feud, PPV's are used for major moments and endings of feuds. There's a lot of midcard feuds in the 80's that was never properly displayed on PPV in favour of doing them on their weekly shows or MSG cards. A little example:
One of my favorite feuds in 1988 was Jake Roberts vs Rick Rude. It all centered around Rude's arrogance and belief that every woman wanted him. He became upset when one woman turned him down. As it turns out, that woman was Jake Robert's wife. So for most of '88, these two feuded. They had a double DQ at Wrestlemania. With the very first Summerslam happening in August, it would of made sense to once again book the match. Instead, Rick Rude faced The Junkyard Dog and Roberts faced Hercules. During the Rude/JYD match, Rude pulled down his tights to reveal another pair of tights with Jake's wife face on them. Jake came out and they fought some allowing Rude to pick up the DQ win. These two would finish their feud later on in the year at some house shows in a finish vs finish match.
If we're paying money to see an event, it makes a lot more sense to pay to see feuds come to an end instead unfolding in front of our eyes. It's just smart business.
