He was never one of the best technical wrestlers, but as I have said before, being a great wrestler does not mean being a great technical wrestler. He had good wrestling ability. He was very solid and never screwed up a move, and he still doesn't today, but back then he hadn't suffered his two quad injuries yet and was just a lot quicker in the ring. The fact that he was heel meant he used more holds too I guess, because he controlled the matches. Today, there is not too much difference apart from speed. Back then his best matches were no DQ still, but he did put on more good regular one on one matches then, and his Ironman match with The Rock showed they both had a lot of ability.
He wasn't a technical genius back then. He was better than now though, but he hasn't deteriorated as much as people say.
