Mysterio is a luchador as is his uncle and trainer, Rey Misterio, Sr. He debuted as a wrestler in April 1989 at the age of 14 in Tijuana, Mexico. He was too young to wrestle in the United States (U.S.) and athletic commission there would give him a license at his young age. Technically he was also underage in Mexico, but enforcement was generally lax. In Mexico, using the stage name Colibri (hummingbird in Spanish) he began a feud with another luchador, Psicosis (who is also trained by Rey Misterio, Sr.) which lasted several years even after his career moved to the U.S. When Oscar turned 18 his uncle allowed him to use the ring name "Rey Misterio, Jr." Oscar later changed the spelling to "Rey Mysterio, Jr." Rey Mysterio translates to "King of Mystery."
Extreme Championship Wrestling
In 1995 he defeated Psicosis during their debut match on Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), making their first real impacts in American professional wrestling, outside of the WCW-promoted When Worlds Collide pay-per-view (PPV). Their feud stopped for a while after a Mexican Death Match in November 1995 at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia. Rey also appeared at ECW One Night Stand reunion show where he defeated Psicosis once again.
World Championship Wrestling
In 1996, he joined Psicosis in World Championship Wrestling (WCW), continuing their feud on and off for a few years. Rey would find success there, winning the WCW Cruiserweight Championship on numerous occasions. In 1999 he was involved in a feud with Kevin Nash. During this feud Rey showcased his willingness to put his body on the line for his fans and career when he allowed Nash to brutally launch him into the side of a truck. The footage of this incident was shown on WCW television for weeks to show the sadism of the nWo wrestlers, the heart of the luchadores, and more specifically, Rey Mysterio Jr. The feud with Nash culminated in a Caballera vs. Mascara Match (Hair vs. Mask) in which Rey lost. Unmasked, he still had a moderately successful career in WCW with The Filthy Animals until it was sold to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 2001. World Wrestling Entertainment
In 2002, Rey signed with WWE, but was asked to wear the mask again. In Mexico, one could be fined or even have their license suspended in lucha libre by the Box y Lucha Commission for this; there, once a wrestler loses his mask, he cannot regain it. In deference to this tradition, Rey continues to not wear a mask when performing in Mexico. This includues non-wrestling appearances in the Rey Mysterio: 619 DVD produced by WWE, although he wore a mask on the recent tour in Mexico on January 1 and January 20, 2006. Rey is known for his aerial wrestling techniques and has won the WCW/WWE Cruiserweight championship eight times - more than anyone else in history. Rey also performed on the WWE Originals CD (2004) with a bilingual song called "Crossing Borders." The song served as the official theme song for 2004's No Way Out PPV event in San Francisco, California where he was defeated by Chavo Guerrero, Jr. for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.
Relationship with Eddie Guerrero
On February 20, 2005, Rey won his third ever WWE Tag-Team Championship with long time friend, and former rival, Eddie Guerrero. This title was won by defeating Doug Basham and Danny Basham (a.k.a The Basham Brothers) at the 2005 No Way Out PPV. However, in a departure from traditional booking, the new champions did not defend their titles at WrestleMania 21 on April 3, 2005, but instead faced one another, with Rey getting the victory. This led to storyline in which the team broke up and have Guerrero turn heel due to his inability to defeat Mysterio. According to the storyline, Rey was absent from SmackDown! due to an attack by Guerrero. Mysterio returned at Judgment Day and won a match against Guerrero again, who went on to attack Mysterio repeatedly with a steel chair. Guerrero and Mysterio continued to feud, with Guerrero threatening to reveal a secret he and Mysterio shared involving Mysterio's son, Dominik. Unless Mysterio defered to Guerrero's authority, he threatented to go public with the secret. A match was scheduled for the July 24, 2005 during the Great American Bash, with stipulations that if Mysterio won, Guerrero would not tell the secret, but if Guerrero won, he would. Mysterio defeated Guerrero with his son at ringside.
After the Great American Bash, Eddie Guerrero broke his promise and revealed that he was Dominick's (Mysterio's son) biological father. In the storyline, Guerrero knew Mysterio was having trouble starting his own family, so Guerrero left Dominick with Mysterio and his wife to raise. (In reality Rey Mysterio really is Dominic's father - the "custody dispute" was kayfabe). In subsequent weeks, Guerrero threatened to take custody of Dominick, even drawing up custody papers and having his lawyer present them to Mysterio. At SummerSlam 2005, Mysterio defeated Guerrero in a Ladder Match for the custody of Dominic. On the first edition of Friday Night SmackDown!, Rey Mysterio had his second loss (the first being a WWE Championship match on the SmackDown! after WrestleMania XX) to Eddie Guerrero in a steel cage match, after first missing a crossbody from the top of the cage, and then being hit with Guerrero's Frog Splash. On the September 16, 2005 edition of Friday Night SmackDown!, Mysterio debuted a new entrance theme - "Booyaka 619", a reggaeton song which he sings along with Mad One.
Feud with JBL
Mysterio also had a feud with John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL), which culminated in a match at No Mercy which JBL won. In weeks preceeding No Mercy, the storyline had JBL making statements about being a true American, and stated that Mysterio was not a citizen. The feud continued past No Mercy on the October 21, 2005 edition of SmackDown! where the two were set to face off in a singles contest, which was interupted by RAW wrestlers Edge and Chris Masters, who speared and masterlocked Mysterio. Mysterio got revenge appearing on RAW the following Monday, nailing Edge with a springboard drop kick and Lita with a 619. Taboo Tuesday featured a RAW versus SmackDown! tag team event in which Snitsky (Edge's replacement) and Chris Masters lost to Rey Mysterio and Matt Hardy where the fans voted who the two SmackDown! superstars would be.
Death of Eddie Guerrero
On November 13, 2005, Eddie Guerrero was found dead in his hotel room in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That same day at a WWE "Super Show" where SmackDown! and RAW were both taped, Rey gave an emotional speech about Eddie, and even took off his mask (though he put his head down, so no one could see his face.) Mysterio went on to defeat Shawn Michaels in an interpromotional match later the same night. After the match, Michaels and Mysterio hugged in the ring and Mysterio pointed up to the sky, crying, in memory of Guerrero. Mysterio participated in the main event of Survivor Series as part of Team SmackDown! (along with Randy Orton (Eddie Guerrero's replacement), Lashley, Batista and JBL) who defeated Team RAW (Shawn Michaels, Kane, The Big Show, Carlito, and Chris Masters). On the Tuesday after Survivor Series, Mysterio faced RAW's giant, The Big Show, in a match billed as David vs. Goliath in a Smackdown! Special. The grudge match, stemming from Mysterio pinning The Big Show at Survivor Series, ended as a "no contest" when Big Show's tag team partner, Kane, interfered in the match. On the December 2 edition of Friday Night SmackDown!, Mysterio teamed with JBL to take on Big Show and Kane, but JBL left the match claiming that the referee had poked him in the eye, leaving Rey all alone with Big Show and Kane, eventually losing the match. After the match, Big Show and Kane continued to attack Mysterio, and Batista ran in to save him. It was announced later that Mysterio and Batista would team up to face The Big Show and Kane at WWE Armageddon on December 18, 2005.
Tag Team championship
On the December 16, 2005 edition of SmackDown!, Batista and Rey Mysterio defeated SmackDown!'s Tag Team Champions, MNM to become WWE Tag Team Champions in a match they dedicated to the late Eddie Guerrero. With Batista and Mysterio becoming the Tag Team Champions it turned the clash with The Big Show and Kane at Armageddon into a Champions vs. Champions encounter. Rey Mysterio and Batista lost when Kane gave Mysterio a chokeslam. On the December 30, 2005 edition of SmackDown!, MNM defeated Batista and Mysterio, with help from the returning Mark Henry, to regain the WWE Tag-Team Championships. The following week on January 6, 2006, SmackDown! saw a match for the WWE Tag-Team Championship title with Batista and Mysterio against MNM. In order to prevent Mark Henry from interfering and prevent MNM from winning by escaping, the match took place in a Steel cage and could only be won by pinfall or submisson. The match saw Batista and Mysterio dominate MNM and thwart several futile attempts to escape, but Melina once again called out Mark Henry, who after some reasoning and taunts from Batista, broke the lock with his bare hands and used the door of the cage as weapon against Mysterio and knocked out Batista. After Henry's assault, he dragged Joey Mercury onto Mysterio for the 3-count.
Feud with Mark Henry
On January 13, 2006, Mysterio was one of the contenders in the Over-the-top-rope Battle Royal for the World Heavyweight Championship, after his friend Batista vacated it due to a serious tricep injury. Although Mysterio failed in this attempt, being eliminated by the 400 pound Mark Henry, he was the second to last man eliminated and during his time in the ring managed to almost simultaneously take out Mercury and Nitro of MNM. On the January 20 edition SmackDown!, Mark Henry defeated Mysterio to become the #1 contender for Kurt Angle's World Heavyweight Championship title. The next week, Mysterio again lost to Mark Henry.
Mysterio wins Royal Rumble 2006
On January 29, Mysterio won the Royal Rumble in Miami, Florida. Entering the ring in the number 2 position, Rey dedicated his fight, and later his win to Eddie Guerrero. Althougth WWE has stated that Mysterio is the first to enter at number 2 and win, the first was actually Vince McMahon in 1999. He is, however, the smallest wrestler to ever win the event in both height and weight by a large margin. By winning the Royal Rumble, Mysterio now has the choice of having a World or WWE title shot. This will be the first time Rey will compete for a World Title at a pay per view event, WrestleMania 22 on April 2, 2006. After his win, he was congratulated by Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Rob Van Dam - all old and close friends of Eddie Guerrero.
Feud with Randy Orton
When Rey Mysterio won the 2006 Royal Rumble, the last elimination was Randy Orton. Still upset by this, on the February 3, 2006 episode of Friday Night Smackdown!, Orton interrupted Mysterio's victory speech and verbally attacked him, saying "Eddie was laughing his ass off at [Mysterio], not with [him]," and that "there was no way Mysterio could ever beat him in a real wrestling match". As Mysterio looked upwards, Orton continued by saying that "Eddie Guerrero is not in heaven, he is 'down there'-- IN HELL!" Infuriated, Mysterio attacked Orton with a flurry of enraged punches. Several referees broke up the fight and throughout the remainder of episode, the crowd frequently and loudly chanted Guerrero's name. During the last match of the night, Mysterio and Kurt Angle faced Orton and Mark Henry in a tag team match in which Orton and Henry won, because Angle chased his former manager Daivari out of the arena, followed closely by Mark Henry. After the match, Orton claimed that Mysterio's chances of winning at WrestleMania were the same as Eddie Guerrero coming back to life, prompting Mysterio to put his title shot on the line and fight Orton at No Way Out on February 19, 2006. On the February 10, 2006 episode of Smackdown!, Randy Orton came out in Guerrero's lowrider to mock him again, and said that his words to Mysterio regarding Guerrero from the previous week were just an attempt to get Mysterio's Wrestlemania 22 title shot. He then said that Guerrero wasn't a saint, and was about to read excerpts from Guerrero's autobiography when Mysterio attacked him. After repeated interferences by WWE officials, Mysterio drop-kicked Orton's head into a steel ring post. Throughout this whole ordeal, the crowd was chanting "Eddie" and "You suck" to Orton. Since this feud began, starting with the "Eddie in Hell" comment by Randy, many fans were outraged that Vince McMahon and the WWE would shed light on Eddie's death in such a way. One member of WWE's creative team has even gone so far as to send an anonymous e-mail out to one insider wrestling site stating that the idea was originally going to be dropped, as Randy had enough heat on him as it was. The final decision unfortunately went to Stephanie McMahon and her father, who believed it to be a great storyline. Eddie's nephew Chavo Guerrero Jr. even went so far as to state at a house show in Tallahassee that he did not like the idea at all. At No Way Out he lost to Randy Orton his Wrestlemania opportunity for the World Heavyweight Title. This is the second time a Royal Rumble winner like Rey Mysterio lost his chance to fight for a World title shot due to a number 1 contender match. Triple H similarly lost to Kurt Angle in 2002, even though the next night a rematch ensued and Triple H regained his title shot. It should also be noted that at No Way Out 2000, the Rock lost to the Big Show in a number one contenders match, yet still competed in the main event at Wrestlemainia. It is unknown how the WWE will handle this situation however.
Trivia
Rey was 22 when he married Angie, they have two children, Dominik and Aaliyah.
He has numerous tattoos, his children's names, various designs, his masks, and the word "Mexican" on his stomach. He also has a big tatooed back bone on his back.
He currently wears the "EG" Armband in every match to pay tribute to his friend Eddie Guerrero.
His version of the Tiger feint kick, called the "619," gets its name from San Diego's area code, Mysterio's hometown. He was booed for using this move at ECW One Night Stand, because he started using this move when he started competing for WWE, after he left ECW.
Every match, when Mysterio wears his trademark clothing, he wears contact lenses to match the color of his clothes.
Due to the WWE's commitment to keep Rey Mysterio's identity a secret, (and to hide the fact that he lost the mask before) the WWE cannot air any matches of Mysterio in WCW after he lost his mask on their WWE 24/7 pay-per-view service. The DVD of Mysterio even goes so far as to blur his face on the photos in his home. The only time that Rey was unmasked in the WWE it was in the Eddie Guerrero tribute RAW show. Although he removed his mask, he didn't show his face to the camera. Mysterio had also unmasked while giving a motivational speech to participants in Tough Enough III, with his back to the camera.
With Spike Dudley's release in 2005, Rey Mysterio is currently the lightest male wrestler on both the RAW and Smackdown! rosters.
He graduated from high school with P.O.D. members Paul "Sonny" Sandoval and Noah "Wuv" Bernardo.
He holds the record for the longest time in a Royal Rumble match with 62:15, beating out Chris Benoit's 2004 record.
Rey Mysterio is the lightest and shortest wrestler to ever win the Royal Rumble.
He is the first Hispanic-American and the first masked wrestler to ever win the Royal Rumble.
